FROM MICHAEL LOMBARDI:

DOES THE SIGNING OF KURT WARNER MEAN FREE AGENCY IS OVER?

For the most part, it’s virtually over.  Once the contract of Baltimore’s Ray Lewis is done, then it will really be over.  However, the interesting question is what restricted free agent becomes the next target?  Everyone knows I love Lance Moore.  Here are Moore’s numbers last season, compared to Wes Welker’s numbers in 2006:

G      REC   YDS   Y/GAME    AVG    LG    YAC   1ST TD

2006   Wes Welker (Miami)                 16       67     687       42.9       10.3     38      4.3      33    1

2008   Lance Moore (New Orleans)     16       79     928       58.0       11.7     70      3.7      40   10

I realize it will cost a second-round pick, but Moore is a talent and a great slot wide receiver.  He’s only 26 years old, he can make people miss with the ball in his hands, and he’s the kind of player who forces teams to double him on third down.  With the Saints’ signing of Devery Henderson today, this might be the time for a team to make a move.

If you need a defensive lineman, consider Stephen Bowen of the Cowboys.  He was tendered a second-round pick, but he has size and power and might be a great addition to a team trying to find some five techniques.  The draft is not normally deep in defensive linemen, and if a team is picking near the bottom of the second, Bowen could be a better option than any player you might find there.

WIP CALLS ME OUT...

I had a few friends from the Philadelphia area (all Eagles fans) call to tell me that the WIP radio morning show ripped me for my comments the other day regarding Brian Dawkins.  They could at least have let me defend myself because I didn’t mean to be insensitive to Dawkins.  Bill Parcells used to remind me all the time, when something bad happens, there’s no sense complaining.  He also used to say, “Stop kicking the dog; the dog is already dead.”  I respect Dawkins’ game and his career, but I really believe the Eagles have bigger issues to fix right now.  I think the key for them is to focus on how they’re going to improve the team and whom they might be able to spend all that cap money on.

LIGHTEN UP, FRANCIS, I MEAN DAVE FROM YAHOO...

I love all the reader comments, I really do, but I don’t have any house favorites in the NFL.  I do respect and admire the work of Bill Belichick, and I rarely believe he is off course.  However, I think the same of Mike Tomlin, and I don’t even know him.  Belichick might not be a media favorite, or a favorite of Jets fans, but if you love the game, there’s a lot to learn watching him work his craft.

SOMETHING TELLS ME BRADY QUINN IS NOT THE STARTER IN CLEVELAND ... SORRY, MICKER...

I know things have been quiet on the shores of Lake Erie in terms of free agency, but the word I’m hearing is that Brady Quinn will have to win the job in Cleveland.  Don’t be surprised if the Browns make a play for one of the quarterbacks in the draft. As they make over their facility, they might be making more changes with the roster.  Quinn is too inconsistent with his accuracy, as is former starter Derek Anderson.  The Browns might fit into the category of what John Madden used to refer to as “having a lot of something means you have nothing.”

(And the Micker I’m referring to is my son, who happens to be the biggest Brady Quinn fan in the world.  This won’t make him happy.)

IF BRIAN CUSHING IS THE BEST LINEBACKER IN THE DRAFT, WHY CAN’T I FIND HIM ON THIRD DOWN?

This bothers me considerably, and so far, all the tape I’ve watched on Cushing makes me wonder what his role will be on third down in the NFL.  I’ll keep searching for an answer, but I’m getting frustrated.  The best linebacker in the draft?  Really?

LEADERSHIP BOOK OF THE WEEK...

STRENGTHS BASED LEADERSHIP

From the author of the long-running No. 1 bestseller “StrengthsFinder 2.0” comes a landmark study of great leaders, teams and the reasons people follow.

Nearly a decade ago, Gallup unveiled the results of a landmark 30-year research project that ignited a global conversation on the topic of strengths. More than 3 million people have since taken Gallup's StrengthsFinder assessment, which forms the core of several books on this topic, including the No. 1 international bestseller, “StrengthsFinder 2.0.”

In recent years, while continuing to learn more about strengths, Gallup scientists have also been examining decades of data on the topic of leadership. They studied more than 1 million work teams, conducted more than 20,000 in-depth interviews with leaders, and even interviewed more than 10,000 followers around the world to ask exactly why they followed the most important leader in their life.

In “Strengths Based Leadership,” No. 1 New York Times bestselling author Tom Rath and renowned leadership consultant Barry Conchie reveal the results of this research. Based on their discoveries, the book identifies three keys to being a more effective leader: knowing your strengths and investing in others' strengths, getting people with the right strengths on your team, and understanding and meeting the four basic needs of those who look to you for leadership.

As you read “Strengths Based Leadership,” you'll hear firsthand accounts from some of the most successful organizational leaders in recent history, from the founder of Teach For America to the president of Ritz-Carlton, as they discuss how their unique strengths have driven their success. Filled with novel research and actionable ideas, it will give you a new road map for leading people toward a better future.

I absolutely *love* Lance Moore. Some smart team is going to get a steal if they are able to get him for a second. (I hope it's the Pats ...)

It's hard to compare someone to Wes Welker's stats with Miami. He had one career touchdown with them and in his first game back to Miami with New England he had two.

I just don't see Drew Brees as a fair comparison of Quarterbacks, it's also an offensive team, etc. Let's see Welker's numbers now vs. Lance Moore.

I love Lance Moore too. Thanks to him, Brees, the Steelers defense and a couple of rookie hbs (Forte and Slaton) I won my fantasy league on NFL.com. He had a terrific year, but I don't know if that happened thanks to the Saints system or simply because he's a hackuva player.nyway I'll bet a 2nd rounder on him...

I like Moore, but I do have a question about him as far as the Pats go. Actually, a few questions.

First, don't they already have the best slot WR in football in Welker? Can Moore play on the outside, or does it matter?

Secondly, if the Pats did sign him to an offer sheet and had to give up the second pick, assuming the Saints dont match, which 2nd would it be? Would it be their own, 58? How does that work when a team has multiple second round picks.

Andrew

When making an offer for a RFA a team may only give up its own "natural" pick, so for the Pats it would be their lowest of their three seconds (which is why it make too much sense for them).

As to Moore, I think he is more than just a slot WR. When Colston and others were hurt, he stepped into the starting lineup, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he was starting on the outside.

I'd see him filling more of a Deion Branch than Welker role on NE.

"IF BRIAN CUSHING IS THE BEST LINEBACKER IN THE DRAFT, WHY CAN’T I FIND HIM ON THIRD DOWN?"

Word, very overrated. He may have some kind of role with his hand on the ground, but I don't see him being quick enough. Maybe if he had some kind of flex position where you line him up off the ball and he has rules governing him for backfield keys or over the tight end. A lot of teams do this with their hybrid players at the HS and college level now.

Someone to basically convert into a zone coverage end and smell out screens....

As for the Saints and RFA, what about lineman Zach Strief?

Dude, The Saints are NOT going to let Lance Moore leave, We only have 4 receivers signed to the roster right now, They are not gonna draft a receiver, And they NOT gonna let him go just to bring in somebody else. I think they're shopping him to see what the leagues perception of him is. He is obviously a #2, But what type of #2 ? Do you pay him like Reggie Wayne ? Probably not, Like TJ Houshmazedah ? Possibly, Maybe more along the lines of a Santonio Holmes, Wes Welker. I beleive the Saints will cut and restructure the crap outta the roster just to keep him in the Easy!!!!Plus he wants to be here with Breesy!!!

Yeah too bad Mick. It's ok Quinn will be nothing special anyways, perhaps a fancy Jeff Garcia. Losing his favorite target Winslow will weigh heavy on him unless his Michigan Foe Braylon can step up. Mr. L, can the kid get some love for his niners? Everyone is ripping them about trying to get Warner when Singletary said they were set to be a run-first powerhouse offense. Can you blame them for trying? Or perhps just upping the asking price for the Cards? Little rivalry never hurt anybody. Let's draft Michael Johnson, get Brandon Spikes the next year and start up a formiddable defense so we can place a Trent Dilfer in their and work our way to the Bowl. YEAHHH.

Hmmm. So the Browns are not happy with the accuracy of Quinn or Anderson. Does anyone think that Matthew Stafford is the answer? Or just another overrated, inaccurate/erratic QB?
