FROM MICHAEL LOMBARDI:
DOES THE SIGNING OF KURT WARNER MEAN FREE AGENCY IS OVER?
For the most part, it’s virtually over. Once the contract of Baltimore’s Ray Lewis is done, then it will really be over. However, the interesting question is what restricted free agent becomes the next target? Everyone knows I love Lance Moore. Here are Moore’s numbers last season, compared to Wes Welker’s numbers in 2006:
G REC YDS Y/GAME AVG LG YAC 1ST TD
2006 Wes Welker (Miami) 16 67 687 42.9 10.3 38 4.3 33 1
2008 Lance Moore (New Orleans) 16 79 928 58.0 11.7 70 3.7 40 10
I realize it will cost a second-round pick, but Moore is a talent and a great slot wide receiver. He’s only 26 years old, he can make people miss with the ball in his hands, and he’s the kind of player who forces teams to double him on third down. With the Saints’ signing of Devery Henderson today, this might be the time for a team to make a move.
If you need a defensive lineman, consider Stephen Bowen of the Cowboys. He was tendered a second-round pick, but he has size and power and might be a great addition to a team trying to find some five techniques. The draft is not normally deep in defensive linemen, and if a team is picking near the bottom of the second, Bowen could be a better option than any player you might find there.
WIP CALLS ME OUT...
I had a few friends from the Philadelphia area (all Eagles fans) call to tell me that the WIP radio morning show ripped me for my comments the other day regarding Brian Dawkins. They could at least have let me defend myself because I didn’t mean to be insensitive to Dawkins. Bill Parcells used to remind me all the time, when something bad happens, there’s no sense complaining. He also used to say, “Stop kicking the dog; the dog is already dead.” I respect Dawkins’ game and his career, but I really believe the Eagles have bigger issues to fix right now. I think the key for them is to focus on how they’re going to improve the team and whom they might be able to spend all that cap money on.
LIGHTEN UP, FRANCIS, I MEAN DAVE FROM YAHOO...
I love all the reader comments, I really do, but I don’t have any house favorites in the NFL. I do respect and admire the work of Bill Belichick, and I rarely believe he is off course. However, I think the same of Mike Tomlin, and I don’t even know him. Belichick might not be a media favorite, or a favorite of Jets fans, but if you love the game, there’s a lot to learn watching him work his craft.
SOMETHING TELLS ME BRADY QUINN IS NOT THE STARTER IN CLEVELAND ... SORRY, MICKER...
I know things have been quiet on the shores of Lake Erie in terms of free agency, but the word I’m hearing is that Brady Quinn will have to win the job in Cleveland. Don’t be surprised if the Browns make a play for one of the quarterbacks in the draft. As they make over their facility, they might be making more changes with the roster. Quinn is too inconsistent with his accuracy, as is former starter Derek Anderson. The Browns might fit into the category of what John Madden used to refer to as “having a lot of something means you have nothing.”
(And the Micker I’m referring to is my son, who happens to be the biggest Brady Quinn fan in the world. This won’t make him happy.)
IF BRIAN CUSHING IS THE BEST LINEBACKER IN THE DRAFT, WHY CAN’T I FIND HIM ON THIRD DOWN?
This bothers me considerably, and so far, all the tape I’ve watched on Cushing makes me wonder what his role will be on third down in the NFL. I’ll keep searching for an answer, but I’m getting frustrated. The best linebacker in the draft? Really?
LEADERSHIP BOOK OF THE WEEK...
From the author of the long-running No. 1 bestseller “StrengthsFinder 2.0” comes a landmark study of great leaders, teams and the reasons people follow.
Nearly a decade ago, Gallup unveiled the results of a landmark 30-year research project that ignited a global conversation on the topic of strengths. More than 3 million people have since taken Gallup's StrengthsFinder assessment, which forms the core of several books on this topic, including the No. 1 international bestseller, “StrengthsFinder 2.0.”
In recent years, while continuing to learn more about strengths, Gallup scientists have also been examining decades of data on the topic of leadership. They studied more than 1 million work teams, conducted more than 20,000 in-depth interviews with leaders, and even interviewed more than 10,000 followers around the world to ask exactly why they followed the most important leader in their life.
In “Strengths Based Leadership,” No. 1 New York Times bestselling author Tom Rath and renowned leadership consultant Barry Conchie reveal the results of this research. Based on their discoveries, the book identifies three keys to being a more effective leader: knowing your strengths and investing in others' strengths, getting people with the right strengths on your team, and understanding and meeting the four basic needs of those who look to you for leadership.
As you read “Strengths Based Leadership,” you'll hear firsthand accounts from some of the most successful organizational leaders in recent history, from the founder of Teach For America to the president of Ritz-Carlton, as they discuss how their unique strengths have driven their success. Filled with novel research and actionable ideas, it will give you a new road map for leading people toward a better future.
Yes, Moore played on the outside the majority of the time, although that's a little misleading since Sean Payton's system puts different guys in different positions on almost every down.
I may be wrong, but don't most draftniks consider Aaron Curry the best LB in the draft.
As for Cushing, he may be a little of that John Madden wisdom too. Cushing, Maualuga & Clay Matthews might be a case of 'a lot of something means you have nothing'.
Is Lance Moore that good or more of a product of the Sean Payton and Drew Brees?
As for Dawkins, you brought the heat on yourself. You ignored what he meant to the team, city, and fans and just went right into attacking the fans and telling us to "stop bitching". The fact that they have other needs is irrelevant because guess what, they also need a Safety now and they just let one walk when they have $48 mill in cap room.
i hated the brian dawkins move on philly's part, but i was ready to get on board with the logic that it was time to move on. but then yesterday they brought in shawn springs for a visit and talked about moving him to safety. think about that for a second. joe banner contended yesterday that philly was surprised that dawkins didn't give them a chance to counteroffer before he signed with denver. perhaps this is true. but what's also true is that the offer they made to dawkins was pretty weak (especially considering their significant cap space), meaning they had to know there was a decent chance he'd get a better one elsewhere. and, if he did, that would mean they'd have to go out and find someone to replace him. in essence, then, they had to be ok with the notion of replacing brian dawkins with a guy like shawn springs. shawn springs used to be a good player but he was never brian dawkins -- not then and not now. no physically, not emotionally, and certainly not in terms of what he means to philly. the whole episode is just another glaring example of why there's such a huge disconnect between management and the fan base in that town. it's a business, of course, and in business there isn't a lot of room for sentimentality. but most busineses usually have some idea about what matters to their customers. the banner regime might too. the difference is they just don't care...
Not to mention that Shawn Springs isn't even a Safety! They want to convert him. What's Mike say - "don't confuse hope for a plan". The Eagles just want to HOPE they can sign Dawkins for cheap. Now they want to HOPE they can turn Springs into a Safety. And please do not try and sell to us that Dawkins is too old and then start trying to convince us 34 year old Shawn Springs isn't.
Just making sure you know how you come across Mike thats all. Its constructive criticism.... When you called the Brandon Moore release and resigning the most absurd thing in free agency..the same week ovlorsky got 9 million and denver signed a long snapper for 5 million...I mean...even you have to admit...that was a bit harsh. Plus to listen to you and simmons go on and on about Cassel how you cant believe he didnt get a #1 pik for him..even though not one other GM thought he was worth a #1 ..and you guys may be in the minority....your Bellicheck bias just oozes. Still a fan...just want to make sure you know the perception out here
right on the money as usual with the brady quinn take...guy can't hit 5 outta 10 guys...can't throw a deep out or deep seam...I know there is limited film on him so far...but the guys who really know can tell he stinks...You haven't heard one guy in the know praise Brady Quinn and you will certainly not here the Mangenius say anything...Browns should trade for Tyler Thigpen...late
Murder, you have no idea what you are talking about re Cushing, despite the fact you try to throw in enough football terms (hand on the ground) to try and disguise your ignorance.
As for Mr. L's question about Cushing, where are you hearing he's the best LB? Every mock draft I see, including this site's has him behind Curry and Matthews and sometimes behind Maualuga.
I think Cushing is a real solid Lb who makes plays; the question I have is where on the tape is Matthews? I've watched a lot of USC games and while Cushing, Maualuga, and even the other kid (who stepped up big in the Rose Bowl) stand out but Matthews didn't.
I'll take Maualuga first, then Cushing, then I worry about the other two.
Mike,
I'm a Chiefs fan and I would LOVE to see the Chiefs trade Larry Johnson straight up for Lance Moore. The Saints need a bigger back and the Chiefs desperately need a slot receiver. On top of that, the Chiefs could handle the cap hit for trading Johnson. Seems like a good match for both teams.
Lance Moore is an exclusive rights free agent, Which means he can only resign with the Saints and they have the right to refuse any team pursuing him. I'm sure Loomis and Payton has already told every team "Don't even think about it", That's probably why noone has heard about any activity concerning Lance Moore. They're gonna do the same thing to him next year that they did to Henderson this year. Henderson had a 1 year deal last year, 4 years this year. We don't need a second round draft pick for him, Between free agency and the 4 draft picks we have, We should be fine.

The Eagles could have picked up some better free agents, but they failed to do so despite being 40 million under the cap.
The eagles have been playing it cheap because maybe they are still paying for the loss in revenue it took to build that stadium.
