FROM MICHAEL LOMBARDI:

In today’s installment of our division-by-division breakdown of team needs, we examine the AFC South. Here are five questions teams must answer as they head into next month’s NFL Draft:

AFC SOUTH

            HOUSTON

1.    Can anyone besides Mario Williams play in the defensive line?  I know the Texans signed Antonio Smith, but they need more help.  They struggled to slow anyone down and last year ranked 31st in allowing four-yard gains on first down.  They have three No. 1s in the line and, besides Williams, no production.

2.    SPEED, SPEED SPEED.  Will the Texans find some team speed in their defensive back seven?  They struggled to make plays in space.

3.    Is Jacques Reeves really a starting NFL corner?

4.    I know they love former Denver players, but they can only get you in trouble.  Who will be Houston’s starting strong safety?

5.    Are the Texans tough enough of offense, or are they just a good team that will turn the ball over when they play bigger, stronger teams?  Last season, they were 29th in turnover/takeaway differential.

            INDIANAPOLIS

1.    How can the Colts improve their third-down defense?  Last year, they were 31st in the NFL in this category.

2.    How do they improve their run game?  Is it their line or their back?  They need to find a way to run the ball better than their 3.4 yards per attempt last season.

3.    Who will replace Marvin Harrison and his 60 catches?  He might not have been the same Marvin, but he did average five catches a game; someone needs to step up.

4.    Can they find someone else, other than Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, to pressure the passer?  Combined, those two had 22 of 30 team sacks.

5.    Special teams -- especially the return game -- has always been a deficiency.  Can the Colts find a returner who can help vertical field position?

            JACKSONVILLE

1.    Do the Jags really think Tra Thomas is their answer at left tackle?  They must find some long-range answers to solve their offensive line problems.

2.    Wide receiver always seems to be a concern for the Jags.  Who’s going to be the No. 1 wideout?

3.    The defensive line is getting older and did not handle the run last year.  Who will they add to increase the depth of their line and improve their talent base?  Three starters in the D-Line are over 30 years old.

4.    How can they improve their pass rush? The lack of one resulted in their defense giving up more than eight yards per pass attempt last season.

5.    Who’s the back-up quarterback?  If David Garrard doesn’t rebound, whom do they go with?

            TENNESSEE

1.    Losing Chris Carr might not seem like much, but he averaged 28 yards on kickoff returns and 10 yards on punt returns.  Who will handle these jobs?

2.    Will the addition of Nate Washington allow the Titans to make big plays down the field and improve their passing game?

3.    Who will be the new Albert Haynesworth?  No one player is going to replace him, but who will be the player to create mismatches?

4.    Who will be the third corner?  Nick Harper is getting older, and this means a third corner might have to be a second corner at some point during the season.

5.    The Titans will need to add more speed and youth to their linebacker corps.  Who will fill that role?

The way the Colts play that Tampa 2 defense, doesn't it seem they count so much on a few key players to perform at an exceptional level of athleticism?

As you pointed out they rely on the two DE's, but those guys need to be in peak form to utilize their speed. Same thing with the Safeties.

That's great for the 1st 6 games but it seems to me they're built to wear down as the year goes on.

Colts have been real quiet for a team that wants to win a super bowl too. Lot of pressure for a new head coach.

I know they draft well, but they haven't left themselves much room for error IMO.

Mark, the Colts were said to be going away from the Tampa 2. I think the Bears are the only team still really doing it, although they blitzed more than anyone in the league last year so maybe the name lives on but it doesn't in practice. My question is this: The Colts just lavished a huge deal on Kelvin Hayden at CB but they are changing their D. We saw a lesser guy, Jason David, get killed switching from being a Cover 2 Dungy corner to man coverage in New Orleans. I'll be curious to read what is YPA is from KC Joyner during the season

As a Vandy/Titans fan, I would love to see the Titans grab DJ Moore. I'm kinda shocked by his combine numbers, but hopefully his pro day and film will convince the Titans his stock plummet wasn't warranted and can keep this guy in Nashville!

The stats say Jacques Reeves actually played better than people think. According to stats Inc. Reeves was thrown at 109 times and gave up 53 completions and three touchdowns. Players who gave up a higher percentage of completions include Antonio Cromartie, Aaron Ross, Charles Tillman, Quentin Jammer, Cortland Finnegan, Dominique Rodgers Cromartie, and Asante Samuel. Both of the cowboys starting corners gave up a higher percentage of completions. So why is he perceived to be so bad? Maybe the stats are misleading. Who keeps track of these stats, the NFL or the home team? Maybe it his disconcerting habit of not locating the ball when its in the air. Maybe its because he was worse on the Cowboys where they played zone than in the Texans man defense. Maybe its guilt by association with the rest of the Texans secondary. Bottom line is fix the pass rush and the Texans secondary doesn't look so bad anymore. The stats I mentioned were pulled from a blog post from John McClain at chron.com.

The Texans tackling was also abyssmal last year at the start of the season.

Also important for the Texans - keep Matt Schaub upright. Rosenfels wasn't all-world but he was a good backup and Schaub has had problems staying healthy. The Texans need to keep his jersey clean.

The Jags need a lot of help on both sides of the ball. Hopefully they can trade out of the 8th spot in the draft and get additional picks. Tra Thomas was a short term solution but it means they do not have to reach for a tackle in the first round. They did not have anyone on the roster who was capable of playing LT.

I guess I DID miss this column, Lombardi! I'm so glad someone else besides me notices the need for some quicker OLBs on the Titans team. I love Keith Bulluck. Love him. He made a lot of tackles this past year...

But...

I saw him trot toward breakaway RBs way too many times this year.
