FROM MICHAEL LOMBARDI:
ANDRE SMITH WORKOUT TODAY...
Smith worked out for scouts in Alabama. He was not impressive in any physical area and may have worked out too soon to prove to scouts and executives that he has the work habits to be a top-10 pick. He had consistently bad 40 times, which are easy to overlook, but only benched 225 pounds 19 times, indicating he’s not a weight-room warrior. His lack of commitment to working out in the weight room shows a person who is not self-motivated. One of the key components of a successful lineman is self-motivation – being a hard worker. Smith demonstrated today he lacks that quality. He needs to get back in the weight room and learn how to work hard.

Will this take him out of the top 10? Right now, it might. Work habits are critical to a team paying all that money to a top draft pick. The risk of giving huge guaranteed money to Smith, especially with his lack of self-motivation, is sizable. Even if he improves his time and his numbers, the core person may not change. The next two-week period might help his bench and might help reshape his body. It might even improve his 40 time. But it won’t change who he really is as a person.
JAY CUTLER AND THE BRONCOS
“Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler said the meeting didn't go as hoped, according to the NFL source, adding that (coach Josh) McDaniels reiterated no one is untradable for the sake of improving the team and that the quarterback was expected to report for the team's offseason conditioning program that begins Monday. Offseason conditioning workouts are — by definition — ‘voluntary,’ but players understand coaches expect them to attend.”
This story needs to end. Cutler needs to understand the business of football and get over it. I love how Cutler plays and feel badly that the firing of Mike Shanahan turned his world upside down. But it’s time to get back to work and prove you’re a leader and a star quarterback and are going to compete.

I think back to when the 76ers traded Allen Iverson to the Pistons. However, because of Matt Geiger’s reluctance to waive his no-trade clause, the trade never happened. Iverson had to go back to Philadelphia and play for a coach who was actively trying to trade him. Iverson then led that team to the NBA Finals and won the league’s MVP award.
Stuff happens in pro sports. We all have to move along, players, coaches and executives alike. Life is never measured by what we achieve but rather by what we overcome. You can overcome this, Jay. It’s really not a big deal.
NFL NETWORK VIDEOS....
I do not think Cutler is a whiner...He just needs some seasoning understanding the pro business. McDaniels is right, no one is untradable. Just like no one is unfirable...McDaniels take note.
What kind of offer would it take for the Broncos to trade Cutler? I can't imagine it would be anything less than a 1st and a QB, or a 1st and 3rd.
I agree that the overall sub-par performance of Smith points to his work ethic being questionable. He'll need a Coach that can push & motivate him. Also some weight control clauses & performance incentives in his contract are probably a must.
One thing to keep in mind about the bench press numbers is I noticed Smith has the longest arms out of any OT out there. At 35 3/8" their massively long which makes the bench press more difficult. Not many OT's came close to his arm length. His plus is his lower half body strength & general build. He's thick & strong in these departments which aids in propelling his dominant run blocking.
As a reference here's some of his peers bench press numbers. IMO this + his overall strength & conditioning could be improved by putting him on a weight program like Saban accomplished.
Jason Smith - 33 (BEAST, WORK ETHIC ++)
Eugene Monroe - 23
Michael Oher - 21
Andre Smith - 19
William Beatty - 27
Eben Britton - 24
This whole ordeal was a Superb opportunity for Jay Cutler to show his true leadership abilities. Unfortunately Jay Cutler has taken this opportunity to prove otherwise. In fact he is beginning to sound like a 'Personified Crybaby Par Excellence. Yuck!
In conclusion no one ever gets anywhere rendering a negative for a negative. Headway will only come about when we are able to render positive for a negative.
How is Cutler a whiner?
In my opinion, he is not complaining about being traded. He is complaining about the fact that he was lied to, and now the relation has soured even more because McDaniels has yet to address the issue of him saying one thing to Cutler and then trying to do another.
How do you trust your boss after that? I would hate to work for someone whom has no problem lieing to your face and then completely ignores the fact that he did it. It destroys the relationship.
That is what is happening in Denver; Jay Cutler had daily meetings with McDaniels, and then the Head Coach did a complete 180 from what they were talking about...
thanks for keeping this hot Mike
go raiders. lol
Mike: His reps weren't too far off from what Oher or Monroe posted. He has very long arms and is a true junior that has less time in the weight room than some of these guys. Are NFL scouts going to ignore this and what he's proven on the field simply over the combine incident? I have a hard time buying that. To me it looks like some scouts have gotten their panties into a bunch because he blew them off at the combine and they're trying to twist everything this kid has done into a negative. Warren Sapp failed numerous drug tests and 'slid' to #12. I doubt the penalty for skipping the combine is higher than that.
Mike: Phil Loadholt has the longest OT arms, at 36 1/2", equaled only by Herman Johnson amongst all the OL. Loadholt did 26 reps with those long arms at his pro day after 24 at the combine.
Great choice of photo, Mike. :)
Most of the he/said she/said drama involving Cutler is from unsubstantiated sources and is found only at Denver's CBS affiliate and at The Denver Post Niether McDaniels or Cutler have even been quoted for almost two weeks and whoever is leaking the 'information' is so trustworthy that they are apparently afraid to give their name. I would agree that the incident speaks poorly of Cutler if it is true, but since reports originating outside of Denver are far less dramatic, I don't see how I or anybody can make a judgement of either Jay Cutler or Josh McDaniels character at this point. As frustrating as it is, nnd judging the lack of hard imformation, both parties are trying to keep the spat in-house and should be given credit for trying to do so. There simply is no evidence that Cutler is 'a baby' or that Josh McDaniels is a power hungry idiot. All we know for sure is that Cutler was stunned by the development and talked before he got his thoughts in order. He hasn't talked since.
This is a much bigger reason why this story needs to end. Nobody, except the parties involved, have the slightest idea what is going on and speculation at this point is old news.
This is just a personality clash IMO. McDaniels has not had to adapt to many different personality types yet. He'll get better at it.
Cutler isn't a Whiner he's more emotional. Clearly McDaniels is more of a melancholy temperament.
They just need to get used to each other. This is a shotgun marriage and if they're both worthy, they'll work it out.
