Notre Dame Wide Receiver Golden Tate

Golden Tate: No. 23, WR, 5-11, 195

Tate showcases good short-area quickness and body control when asked to get in and out of his routes. He has impressive initial speed off the line, but it's his second gear that allows him to consistently get downfield and make plays vertically. He displays the ability to consistently track the ball downfield, but he isn't a natural catcher. Tate lets the ball get into his body too much and looks content to trap the ball against his frame, which causes him to drop too many passes in all areas of the field. He has the burst to create separation out of his breaks and does a great job changing speeds when asked to set up corners. He knows how to work vs. zone coverage.

He does a good job driving corners up the field and stopping on a dime but doesn't consistently work back toward the ball. Tate displays impressive balance and body control after the catch, but he can be bullied off the line of scrimmage too easily, and I don't know if he has the size to make a living on the outside in the NFL. He's still learning the nuances of route running and has a tendency to get sloppy in and out of his breaks. He looks more like a slot guy to me with the ability to get downfield.

Grade: 6.3
