From Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel:

Pittsburgh -- Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy's new defensive coordinator will be Dom Capers.

A source familiar with the search process said Sunday night that McCarthy and Capers had reached an agreement on a new deal that would bring the longtime defensive coordinator and former head coach to Green Bay.

Capers made himself known with a 3-4 defense, but he has worked with other defenses as well and probably will employ a hybrid 3/4 - 4/3 defense. This past season, Capers was a special assistant with the New England Patriots, coaching mostly in the secondary.

Capers was the fourth of four prominent defensive coaches to interview with McCarthy. He visited Friday night and Saturday with McCarthy and then agreed to a new deal Sunday night.

Terms of the agreement are not known.

In Capers, McCarthy would be getting a coach who cut his teeth in the 3-4 system and used it consistently, sometimes with great success and other times with very little. During his three years as head coach of the Texans, his biggest failure was getting the defense established. Twice it ranked 31st in the league.

Capers, 58, has some experience running the 4-3, too, and undoubtedly picked up some wide-ranging concepts from Bill Belichick during his year with the Patriots. Part of the interview with McCarthy presumably will be to see how compatible their defensive philosophies are.

Capers got his start in the NFL in New Orleans under coach Jim Mora, moved on to become a very successful coordinator with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was head coach of the Carolina Panthers for three seasons, had two good years as defensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars under Tom Coughlin, was head coach of the Houston Texans for five years and spent two seasons as an assistant in Miami.

He had been rumored to be a candidate to replace New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who took the St. Louis Rams job this week.

If this holds up I want all the McCarthy and TT haters to just shut up! The time to bitch about the "shoulda, woulda, couldas" is long gone, as is Favre. He isn't coming back so get over it, appreciate the fact that Packer management bit the bullet (reminds me of the 1999 house cleaning) and is fully commited to re-establishing this team as the team to beat in the NFC.

Still going to have us TT and McCarthy haters. This team is a great team. Dom should bring some aggressiveness back and hopefully get the D pumping like the Superbowl Years. I do still think McCarthy is best at coaching individuals/not groups. He should have been canned. Thompson is the lamest guy in town. Remember this guy spent a number 16 on JUSTIN HARRELL!!! Murphy needs to step up and be a man and if after this year it is a losing year. Then FIRE Thompson and McCarthy.

so, this is a great team, but the head coach and general manager are awful... *sigh*

Very glad to have Dom Capers running the defense. Now I can exhale!

Whenever an article about the Packers, or one that mentions the Packers, surfaces the Thompson, McCarthy, Favre debate ensues.

Is Dom one of the men they wanted? Assuming that when you sit down and make a list of candidates that there is more than one guy that you could see filling the position. Since I do not recall, going into this weekend, Capers being on "the list" based on media reports, I wonder who the list consisted of. Finally, do the Packers sign Capers as not to lose him to another team two days down the road? Does their list not include Sean McDermott? Does McDermott soley use a DC position, assuming he is hired away from Philly in the next few weeks, to audition to be the next young HC and thus was not on the radar for some teams?

If the Packers did not want to hire the next up-and-comer who'll move on in a season, or two, I think they've made a good hire. Capers has a solid resume including the first four seasons of the Panthers' existance and a solid defense in Jacksonville during their winning years in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Great website and appreciate the Packer insights. I like the hiring of Dom because he's experienced and has had some success. Bob Sanders was good...but based on talent just didn't adjust effectively enough. Not sure if the players bought into his system fully.

I actually think Mike and Ted are doing well...the team is in good financial shape, excellent core players, and were fighting all year. The Packers do have few holes and need depth. The difference between winning and losing in the NFL is so small...so I expect he Packers will not regress but will do better next year. Bring on the draft!

TT and MM should not be fired right now and those that believe they should are being remarkably reactionary, short-sighted, and (in some cases) infantile. I do believe that all head coaches and GMs should undergo a constant evaluation of their performance and this upcoming season is certainly pivotal in determining the future of each of these guys in GB. As for the vocal minority still screaming for both to be canned over the Favre debacle (and it WAS a mess), I feel very sorry for you. You seem to be unable to see the forest for the trees. The Jon Ryan cut was a worse move this past season than the Favre trade!

Ditto, Montyzuma. Jeff Fischer has had his ups and downs in Tennessee but don't see the venom directed his way as I have seen to MM and TT. Drafts should be evaluated after three years; is JH a bust-yeah, probably. But then where is the all-pro Vince Young, Reggie Bush, Matt Lienhart etc, etc. Agree also on the Ryan cut and I would add to that the Tracey White cut. I believe both had more to do with the poor special teams play than anything else.

I think this is a wise move. Capers is a veteran and can change things up a bit. However, if TT doesn't get some more depth, his job may be difficult.

As for the young up and comers from PHI and BAL, no gaurantee for an interview, no gaurantee they are interested, and no gaurantee they'd take the job. MM made a god decision by taking Capers.

Glad to see some more level-headed fans posting, rather than the ravenous, go-for-the-throat lackeys who really don't understand systems.
I agree that Sanders was a good coordinator, and had a good system, and was a very honorable and respectable man, but his big failure was overcoming the injuries, and ultimately that comes down to teaching and development. Also, the scheme lacked flexibility.
Capers will, then, hopefully, bring the versatility of scheme to adapt to the roster however it shapes out as the "best 53" and be able to develop the guys like aaron rouse who seemed to continually make the same mistakes, or just unload mike montgomery who in his fourth year continued to be constantly out of position, regardless of how hard a worker he was.
capers will also have the task of adapting to the strengths of players like hawk, collins, harris, etc. so they can be more effectively utilized. it should also help his cause when the packers bring in not-so-fat albert and draft a few more playmakers for the defense, if they're available which we figure they will be.

I am not opposed to Capers, he definitely is the better candidate than Haslett. but to all out there who think the defense will now suddenly be better, don't bet on it. Capers is experienced and certainly had success as D-Coordinator when he had the personnel. I still maintain that there is no playmaker on the DLine aside Kampman, and he wouldn't do well in a 3-4 which is Capers' expertise, and we have no LBs to play the same aggressive scheme people are expecting here. Capers is a coach, not Santa or any other miracle worker. Without getting significant help on DLine and for Linebackers, we are looking at another disappointing season ahead. Let's not forget, next season we will play 3 of the 4 teams in the Championship games. Good luck to #12 when playing the Steelers and Ravens. Now that is hard-nosed football, guys flying around and hitting. For that style, a team needs elite players, and not many of those are on the Packers roster, especially on defense.
