Panthers DE Greg Hardy free on bond

After an arrest for domestic assault and making threats, Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy is free after posting bond, according to a report from The Charlotte Observer.

His bond totaled $17,000, with $15,000 stemming from the assault and $2,000 from the threats. Hardy was arrested for allegedly throwing a woman into a bathtub, flinging her into a futon and strangling her. Police also allege he made death threats toward her.

Appearing in court Wednesday morning, Hardy was told he cannot communicate with the woman and must attend three Alcoholics Anonymous meetings a week while he's out of jail.

This incident is extremely troubling, considering the Panthers recently tagged him with the franchise designation. He's set to earn $13.1 million this season and has already received the $1.3 milion advance. He finished last season with 15 sacks, a franchise record.

The Panthers have been hopeful of reaching a long-term deal with Hardy, but this could throw a wrench into those plans.

It wouldn't be out of the question for negotiations to stall for a while as Hardy's legal situation plays itself out.
