Panthers say Cam Newton surgery successful

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton had successful surgery on his left ankle, the team announced.

Panthers orthopedic surgeon Robert Anderson performed the procedure.

He's expected to return by training camp.

"Dr. Anderson did not find anything unexpected in the procedure and the surgery went well," Panthers head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion said.
