Possible assault charges loom for Ahmad Brooks

The San Francisco 49ers are on the move to a new stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., in 2014 and that is where prosecutors are waffling over the possibility of charging linebacker Ahmad Brooks with felony assault charges for an alleged attack on a teammate.

The San Jose Mercury News lays out an interesting story, detailing how an arrest warrant on a charge of felony assault with great bodily injury was issued for Brooks last Friday before a “higher ranking” official in the district attorney’s office intervened in an unusual move. It is possible Brooks could be charged with a misdemeanor or not charged at all.

Brooks allegedly attacked 49ers teammate Lamar Divens, a nose tackle, on June 8 after a night of drinking in San Francisco. Brooks is alleged to have hit him three times in the head with a beer bottle and punched him in the face after Divens – who drove Brooks’ car hom – pretended to throw the car keys into the grass.

Brooks has had some trouble in his past. In 2008, he accepted mediation on charges he struck a woman in the face, according to the report. Brooks was dismissed from the University of Virginia team after the 2005 season.

The 49ers declined to comment on the matter and the district attorney also declined comment. Divens initially wanted authorities to pursue charges against Brooks but has changed his mind.
