The San Francisco 49ers have signed quarterback Josh Johnson to a one-year contract, reuniting him with Jim Harbaugh.
Harbaugh coached Johnson at the University of San Diego.
The 49ers cut defensive tackle Christian Tupou to create a roster spot for Johnson.
Johnson was cut this week by the Cincinnati Bengals. He backed up quarterback Andy Dalton.
He played in two regular-season games, rushing seven times for 20 yards. He didn't throw a pass.
The 49ers have five quarterbacks on the roster: Colin Kaepernick, Blaine Gabbert, McLeod Bethel-Thompson, undrafted free agent Kory Faulkner and Johnson.
Johnson was among the 49ers' final roster cuts in the 2012 preseason.
Johnson was cut Monday, two days after the team selected Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron in the fifth round.
Johnson has appeared in 29 games, passing for 1,042 yards with five touchdown passes and 10 interceptions. He has rushed 44 times for 274 yards in his career.
