The cousin of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez avoided jail time due to having advanced cancer as she was sentenced to two years of probation.
Tanya Singleton pleaded guilty to refusing to testify to the grand jury after being granted immunity.
"Ms. Singleton's health is the only reason she is not being placed in jail," Fall River Superior Court Judge E. Susan Garsh said.
Hernandez remains in jail, accused of murdering three men.
Singleton faces a separate contempt case in the murder investigation into two Boston men.
"Ms. Singleton's willful conduct was an assault on the rule of law," Garsh said.
Singleton's attorney, E. Peter Parker, requested a year of home confinement.
"She chose family loyalty over civic duties," Parker said.
