BOURBONNAIS, Ill.--The Minnesota Vikings are not the only team from the NFC North that had a quarterback fly in today.
Matt Gutierrez is expected to land in Chicago within the hour and the young quarterback is headed to training camp at Olivet Nazarene University where he is expected to be signed by the Bears providing he passes his physical.
The Bears have been in the hunt for another quarterback since Sunday morning when they finished assessing the sprained AC joint in Caleb Hanie’s right shoulder. The team made a hard push for veteran Trent Green and was rebuffed. Then, Damon Huard and Todd Collins told the Bears no thanks.
That forced them to head down a different path toward an inexperienced quarterback. That led to Gutierrez, the 26-year-old who spent last season with the Kansas City Chiefs and was with the New England Patriots from 2007 to 2008.
What his chances are remain to be seen, and obviously hinge on Hanie’s health. The team doesn’t expect Hanie to be out too long, and he said Monday that he believes he’s staked a firm claim to the backup job behind Jay Cutler.
Rookie sixth-round draft pick Dan LeFevour is also in camp but the Bears need three arms to get through practices and the preseason.
