The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have occasionally gone retro to break out the orange "cream-cicle" uniforms they wore from the franchise's inception in 1976 through some mostly lean years in the 1980s and 90s before finally changing to their current digs a few years ago.

But the Buccaneers won't be breaking out those uniforms in 2013 or anytime soon thereafter, as the league vetoed that plan, saying that having players switch helmets in the middle of a season can be a safety concern.

Per USA Today's For the Win blog, the Bucs released this statement:

“While we regret that our players will not be able to don the ‘Bucco Bruce’ helmet and traditional orange, red and white uniforms, there simply was no acceptable way to meet the requirements of the new policy while staying true to the spirit of our throwback theme.”
