The Jaguars will have to practice without their playmaking wideout Cecil Shorts III for at least a couple of weeks.
The Jaguars revealed that Shorts has a hamstring injury that will require some time off. While this situation is not ideal for Jacksonville, it could certainly be worse. Speaking to reporters, via the team's official website, Shorts said he'll remain optimistic about the injury.
"Hopefully I can come back as soon as I can," he said. "We're not going to rush it but it's going to take a little time to heal."
Shorts said the injury occurred while working with the quarterbacks in group drills. He ran a 12-yard route, jumped to grab the ball and came down and felt the tweak in his leg. By the time he got to seven-on-seven drills, he was unable to "explode" during drills.
This setback comes after Shorts dealt with a calf injury during OTAs.
"Can't catch a break, but hey, everything happens for a reason," Shorts said. "My plan is to come back stronger than ever."
Hamstring injuries do have a tendency to linger so taking it slow and cautious is probably in Shorts' best interest. Sometimes an athlete can feel fine, only to reinjure the hamstring shortly after returning. The Jaguars will need Shorts for the team to be successful, and to help rookie Marqise Lee along within the offense.
In 2013, Shorts played in 13 games and finished the season with 777 yards and three touchdowns.
