San Diego Chargers outside linebacker Dwight Freeney needs surgery to repair a torn quadriceps tendon and has been placed on injured reserve.

The Chargers also placed wide receiver Malcom Floyd on injured reserve with a sprained neck.

The Chargers signed wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins and outside linebacker Thomas Keiser was promoted signed from the practice squad.

Originally a fourth-round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans out of the University of California-Berkeley in 2008, he recorded 71 catches for 771 yards and one touchdown over five seasons in Tennessee. He has also returned 14 kickoffs in his career for 335 yards, averaging 23.9 yards per return. Hawkins spent parts of this offseason with the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers. He recorded six catches for the 49ers in the preseason for 82 yards.

Keiser was released by San Diego when the roster was cut down to 53 players and signed to the practice squad. Before signing with the Chargers, he spent two seasons with the Carolina Panthers, appearing in 14 games and registering nine tackles, 4.5 sacks, five tackles for loss and one interception.

Offensive tackle Andrew Tiller was signed to the practice squad.
