INDIANAPOLIS _ St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher said he made the decision to fire Gregg Williams during the time that Williams was serving his indefinite suspension last year.
Williams, who was suspended for his role in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal in 2009, has since been reinstated and was recently hired by the Tennessee Titans as a senior assistant.
“We made that decision well before the season ended that we wanted to go a different direction,” Fisher said at the NFL Combine via TitanInsider. “... We just felt like we wanted just to be the Rams defense and moving in a little different direction than what Gregg's philosophies are.”
The other surprising aspect is that Fisher said he has not spoken to Williams since Williams' reinstatement. The two had been best friends for a number of years, dating back to their time on the old Houston Oilers staff together in the mid-90s.
“I have not spoken with him since he was reinstated. I'm happy that it worked out the way it did. I believe Gregg can help the Titans and help Coach (Mike) Munchak, and Coach Jerry Gray. And the other side of that is they can help him re-establish himself back in the league,” Fisher said.
