With 50 percent of the preseason precincts reporting in now, Vito Stellino of the Jacksonville Times-Union is projecting David Garrard still as the slight favorite to retain his job as the Jacksonville Jaguars starting quarterback.
Garrard started the Jaguars' 15-13 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night and was 7 of 12 for 99 yards with one interception in three series of work.
However, Gabbert, whom the Jags traded up to the 10th overall pick to select, was about the same in productivity, going 11 for 23 for 96 yards.
As Stellino points out, a tie in the quarterback competition is going to favor the veteran Garrard, at least in the short term, which explains exactly why Garrard maintains his slight projected edge with Gabbert having two more chances to unseat the incumbent.
