Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy expressed regret that his conviction of assaulting and threatening to kill a former girlfriend has been a sideshow to his team.

Hardy is appealing the verdict and will later receive a jury trial.

"I hate that I have distracted my team, but other than that I can't really answer any questions," Hardy told reporters. He declined to answer questions about the case.

Hardy hasn't been disciplined by the NFL or the team as it's a pending legal matter.

Hardy is the Panthers' franchise player, at a cost of $13.1 million. He recorded 15 sacks last season.
