Thhe New England Patriots announced the re-signing of restricted free agent tight end Michael Hoomanawanui. Terms of the contract were not announced.
Hoomanawanui, 24, was signed by New England as a free agent on Sept. 5, 2012 and played in 14 games with six starts and finished with 5 receptions for 109 yards, a career-long 41-yard reception vs. San Francisco on Dec. 16, and two special teams tackles. He played in both postseason games and started in the AFC Championship game vs. Baltimore.
Hoomanawanui's value to the Patriots could increase in the early portion of the season if Rob Gronkowski's forearm hasn't healed to the point of where he can be available at the start of the season.
Hoomanawanui originally joined the St. Louis Rams as a fifth round draft pick (132nd overall) out of Illinois in 2010. Hoomanawanui was released by the Rams on Sept. 2, 2012. He has played in 30 NFL games with 17 starts and has 25 receptions for 2338 yards and three touchdowns.
