The Baltimore Ravens announced that veteran linebacker Ray Lewis was placed on injured reserve with the recall designation on Wednesday.
The move allows Lewis to return to action in eight weeks, giving the Ravens the option of bringing him back to the 53-man roster following his surgery and recovery from a torn triceps muscle. Lewis suffered the injury in Sunday's win over the Dallas Cowboys.
The Ravens also were without defensive lineman Haloti Ngata (knee) and defensive back Jimmy Smith (abdominal injury) in Wednesday's practice. They have already lost Lewis and cornerback Lardarius Webb from what is perennially one of the league's top defenses.
