On Thursday, Ravens running back Ray Rice pleaded not guilty to a third-degree aggravated assault charge stemming from an incident where he allegedly hit and knocked his then-fiancée Janay Palmer unconscious.

The Baltimore Sun reported that Rice has applied to enter a pretrial diversion program designed for first-time offenders. If accepted, Rice can fulfill what's required with this incident never appearing on his record.

If Rice is denied entry into the program, it's still expected that he won't receive any time behind bars.

"He is going to make an application to the pretrial intervention program," prosecutor Diane Ruberton told The Baltimore Sun. "If he's not accepted, the plea offer will be probation. We're not requesting jail time."
