The competition committee will deliver a report on playoff expansion but it not going to recommend that for the 2013 season at the NFL owners meeting, which begins Sunday in Arizona.
Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports two sources say a report will be made covering “considerations and ramifications” of expanding the postseason field beyond 12 teams. But no action is expected for 2013.
The idea could be looked at more closely moving forward. According to Maske, possibilities include seven teams from each conference making the postseason and eight teams per conference with the possibility the preseason is reduced.
But adding playoff teams would water down the postseason if the NFL moved any closer to having half of its 32 teams reach the playoffs. We’ll see what happens in coming years.
