Sean Payton’s one-year suspension was lifted this morning by the NFL, allowing him to return to work two weeks earlier than expected.
It wasn’t a surprising move given the fact that Super Bowl XLVII is in New Orleans and the league desires some goodwill with locals. Now, it appears former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams could also be cleared to return. If he can find a team interested in his services.
According to Nakia Hogan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Williams is now cleared to pursue work in the NFL. According to the report, Williams’ status will be reviewed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell if he is able to find a team interested in him. Williams was suspended indefinitely by Goodell.
The St. Louis Rams already announced that they will not be asking Williams back. Rams coach Jeff Fisher hired Williams last offseason before the bounty scandal broke. The Rams recently parted ways with Williams’ son Blake as well.
It might be difficult for Williams to find a team to take him on. He’s got to be viewed as toxic in a lot of places. But it will only take one club to give him an opportunity.
