As the days of Donovan McNabb with the Washington Redskins count down – no end is in sight during the NFL’s lockout – an interesting anecdote has emerged that explains how and why his relationship with Mike Shanahan headed south during last season.
According to the Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, McNabb refused to wear a wrist band with play information on it during last season. The show cited multiple unnamed sources, reporting that McNabb said it was hurt his image.
It could hurt Shanahan in the long run as owner Daniel Snyder was not happy with the news during a Super Bowl dinner in which McNabb, his agent Fletcher Smith, general manager Bruce Allen and Shanahan were present.
Shanahan said he tried to get McNabb to wear a wristband and he declined. That news set Snyder off.
“Are you (deleted) kidding me,” Snyder reportedly said. “Why did I hire you as head coach? I am paying you $7 million to coach the team. If he is on the team next year you are getting him to wear the wrist band.”
Our guess is McNabb isn’t on the team next year. He’ll need to learn a new offense wherever he lands.
