Mark Sanchez's numbers weren't spectacular on Sunday, but thanks to Shonn Green's 161-yard rushing day and a resurgent defense, he didn't have to be.
All the New York Jets quarterback had to do was be a complementary part and manage the game without mistakes, which he did in Sunday's 35-9 rout of the Indianapolis Colts.
Sanchez was 11 of 18 for just 82 yards, but had two TD passes and helped the Jets go 5-for-5 in the red zone. The victory and his error-free game also should quell - at least temporarily - the talk of replacing Sanchez with Tim Tebow.
“A good running game, a good defense with three takeaways and a good special teams. Those are all a quarterback’s best friend,” Sanchez told the New York Daily News.
Sanchez also insisted that he had blocked out all the speculation and talk that his starting job was in jeopardy with Tebow waiting in the wings and the Jets struggling coming into the game.
“It’s just part of the job,” Sanchez said. “It was a victory for the team in general. As long as we’re winning, I’m happy. We just have to keep doing that and try to stay efficient. Block everything else out and just keep playing for the guys in the locker room.”
Maybe Sanchez's New York comrade Alex Rodriguez should take a page from that book to see if he can break out of his slump.
