Instead of cutting quarterback T.J. Yates, the Houston Texans traded him to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for linebacker Akeem Dent.
The Falcons also are signing linebacker Tim Dobbins to a one-year, $855,000 contract.
Yates was informed he was being released, but he was never officially cut.
Yates has completed 101 of 166 passes for 1,100 yards, three touchdowns and six interceptions.
He started five games as a rookie and played in six games, going 3-3 in those games.
The 6-foot-4, 217-pounder played collegiately at North Carolina and is a native of Marietta, Ga.
At North Carolina, he passed for 9,377 yards and 58 touchdowns with 37 school records.
Dobbins is a former San Diego Chargers fifth-round draft pick who has recorded 253 tackles, with three interceptions, two sacks and 12 pass deflections.
Last season, Dobbins played in three games as a reserve linebacker. In three seasons with the Texans, he played in 32 games with six starts and totaled 55 tackles with one interception and four passes defensed.
Dent was originally selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round in the 2011 NFL draft.
He played in 47 games with 20 starts totaling 130 tackles, with 1 1/2 sacks, one forced fumble, and three passes defensed in three seasons in Atlanta.
