On the same day that Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden was hired by the Washington Redskins, Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer interviewed with the Tennessee Titans.

Zimmer follows interviews by Gruden and Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell.

Zimmer is a veteran defensive coach whose Bengals dfense ranked third in total defense despite a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament for All-Pro defensive tackle Geno Atkins.

Zimmer is a hard-nosed, blunt-spoken coach who doesn't mince words.

That has probably kept him from landing a head coaching position in the past.

Zimmer has interviewed for head-coaching positions each of the last three years.

Before joining the Bengals, Zimmer was defensive coordinator with the Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys.

Zimmer could add some toughness to the Titans if he's their guy. It's unclear what direction the Titans will go in at this point with no frontrunner pronounced.
