Trent Richardson will be the top running back in Indianapolis this season, but Vick Ballard and Ahmad Bradshaw are both in line for backup carries.

The Colts will be hoping that's still the case after Friday's training camp practice. Ballard was spotted by reporters being carted off the field with what is being reported early as an ankle injury. That would be a huge blow to the Colts, which are hoping to improve what was a horrendous showing in the running game a year ago.

Ballard only saw action in one game last season before tearing his ACL. It's been a long road to his recovery and a severe injury this early would only make things worse for the young running back.

If Ballard's injury is serious, then that means more pressure will be placed on Richardson and Bradshaw to carry the load this season, especially early on. Of course, opening up the passing game more in year two of Pep Hamilton's tenure as Indianapolis' offensive coordinator would help as well.
