Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner has stated that coach Eric Mangini won't be fired at this point, responding to rumors about his job security if the team should lose to the Detroit Lions this weekend.
"I plan on sticking with Eric," Lerner wrote in an e-mail to the News-Herald.
Dropping to 1-8 after Monday night's 16-0 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, the Browns are drawing heavy criticism around the league.
Mangini reiterated that he would do it over again if he could redo the hook-and-ladder play call on the final play of the game that got return specialist Joshua Cribbs flattened and briefly hospitalized.
"It was a competitive moment," Mangini told reporters Tuesday. "In retrospect, I probably would have done it differently if I had to do it again. But it was competitive. I though Josh could make something happen.
"I talked to Josh for a while today. Josh felt like he could have gotten up at that point, but he didn't want to disregard what the medical people were saying. He's moving around fine today, a little stiff and tired. In typical Josh style, he's focused on Detroit."
