From RaiderBeat.com:

A last-ditch effort to revive on-again, off-again talks with the Raiders about signing free-agent offensive tackle Khalif Barnes failed Monday.

The Raiders informed Barnes’ agent, Kenny Zuckerman, that they no longer are interested in signing Barnes, according to a team source.

The two sides discussed the parameters for a deal late last week and appeared close to working out the details. Managing general partner Al Davis stepped in and halted the negotiations because he isn’t ready to commit to who he wants protecting quarterback JaMarcus Russell’s blindside.

Davis, according to the team source, wasn’t sold on Barnes and still is considering using Oakland’s first-round draft pick (No. 7) on one of the many offensive tackle prospects available in this year’s NFL Draft.

Editor’s Note:  We here at the Post reported that Barnes was very close to signing with the Raiders last Friday.  We apologize for the mistake.

Al Davis was very vocal at the end of the season praising LT Mario Henderson for his performance. He was also critical of his coaches that they should have played the 2nd year player earlier at the position. Given that Al controls the draft it shouldn't be a surprise that he expects the kid to start there next year. From what I saw in the last two games I would say they should spend their money more wisely in addressing other needs. They didn't move up in the 2007 draft to grab Henderson to wait & see...It's time to give Henderson the job.

Barnes would have done nicely to the other end of the line IMO. His agent probably wants the premium left tackle gig instead of money for the other position....

Friends said he was practically signed, it's disappointing to pass on him on hearing coach Cable was also ready to add him.

hm, he definitly would have been an upgrade, but as of now we need an upgrade at C more then anything on the OL imo.

if we cant sign either one of Buffalos Freeagents, i expect the Raiders to draft one with their second round pick. thats going to be a even more of a important pos with everybody switching to a 3-4 around us...
