Report: Chargers to fire Turner, Smith

The San Diego Chargers will fire both head coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith at the end of the season, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

According to the report, Chargers team president Dean Spanos decided about a month ago to fire Turner, and more recently has decided that Smith will be out as well with the Chargers standing 4-8 and essentially out of the playoffs again this year. Last year, Spanos elected to keep both men in a move that was largely unpopular wtih Chargers fans.

“I hear a lot of things every day,” Smith said when told of the report. “Dean and I have not discussed my job status. We just discuss our players and what we can do to beat our next opponent.”

Spanos released a statement in response to the report:

“There is only one person in this organization who will make those decisions, and that’s me, and I haven’t shared my thoughts with anyone. I will make evaluations at the end of the season. Anything coming out now – form sources or otherwise – is pure speculation.”The reprot

The report said director of player personnel Jimmie Raye was a likely GM candidate to replace Smith.
