From John Clayton of ESPN.com:
The Chicago Bears pulled the big upset Thursday afternoon by acquiring Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, a source told ESPN.com.
The Broncos confirmed the move.
Terms of the trade weren't immediately available, but the Bears had to beat out the Redskins, Buccaneers, Lions, Titans and other teams to get land the 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterback.
The Broncos had been asking for at least two first-round choices.
Cutler asked to be traded when he found out first-year coach Josh McDaniels tried to acquire Matt Cassel in a trade with the Patriots.
Cutler had not returned phone calls from the Broncos, according to the team, and had been staying away from the offseason program.

From Mike Mulligan of The Chicago Sun Times:
The Bears acquired quarterback Jay Cutler today for No. 1 draft picks in 2009 and 2010, a No. 3 pick this year and Kyle Orton, the Sun-Times has learned.
kyle orton? come on how desperate can u be. I would of expected more
Anyway, I bet Devin Hester is happy
I'm not really sure how Chicago can justify trading 2 1's and a 3 for Cutler when they could have had Cassel for just a 1 or 2.
I just thank god above that the Bronco's didn't end up with Brady Quinn.
Wow 2 first round picks AND Orton? gotta say I think the Broncos got the better end of this deal especially when you consider that Cutler will probably get a new contract as well.
I suppose Orton is better than Quinn, but I don't see how any Broncos fan can have any hope for this season, except to get a high draft pick in 2010
I don't know why Bronco fans would have any hopes dashed, their defense stunk so bad, it didn't matter who was the QB...
Now they got a picks that they can use to jump start the talent rebuilding on defense.... and with guys who want to be there...
...I'm betting Cutler will NOT bring the Bears to the promised land, maybe more interesting, but Cutler is too much of a ME guy...
For the record, this Packer fan has absolutely no idea what to think about this. Stunning!
On the one hand, that big arm will be a real asset on the various tundras of the NFC Norse. On the other, da Bears just mortgaged their future.
Unreal.
Oh well. Better the Bears than the Vikings.
You cannot win in this league anymore without a QB who cannot make plays.
If the Broncos got the better of the deal, you won't be able to convince Bears' fans of it. They're too busy celebrating
I would be very concerned if I were a Bear's fan, their defense gets older every day, the o-line is questionable at best and they don't have anyone for Cutler to throw the ball to unless Hester can finally learn how to catch and run at the same time.
Interesting... I think that both Jay Cutler and Lovie Smith have a birthday next month. Also as strange as it may seem, I think that Jay Cutler and Lovie Smith will make the perfect match. I don't think that it could get any better for either one.
its NFL Norris...after the old hockey division...or of course NFL North. This prevents CHI from drafting a top end OL to keep Cutler vertical too...as long as the Pack gets some OLBs for some TFL then everything should be A-OK.
great trade for bears. Have their qb for a decade. Mcdaniels will be firedin two years
To all the people concerned for about the Bears... you didn't have to see the stupid stat that showed all the Bears QBs during Favre's career.
And if I know anything about the first round of the NFL draft and Jerry Angleo it's this: he doesn't draft all that well in the first round. And there always seems to be more 'busts' than guys who live up to the money they're given. The NFL draft is more than just a round. Plus can you find me someone at #18 who has a proven NFL track record that Cutler has?
Maybe the team over paid, but the Bears are getting more than Joey Galloway.
Call me crazy but I love it, for the sake of renewing the Bears-Packers rivalry. Rodgers-Cutler is going to be an epic battle twice a year, definately makes the Bears better but I don't know how sold I am on Cutler being a GREAT QB. He turns the ball over a ton, he's a hot head, and he's got no WRs and a suspect O-Line in Chi-town. All I know is, Week 1, Rodgers-Cutler, Bears-Packers at Lambeau, on national television is going to be E-P-I-C!
Since Favre launched his streak of 253 consecutive regular-season starts on Sept. 27, 1992, the Bears have made their way through 21 different starting quarterbacks. That figure leads the league.
Henry Burris, Chris Chandler, Will Furrer, Brian Griese, Rex Grossman, Jim Harbaugh, Chad Hutchinson, Erik Kramer, Craig Krenzel, Dave Krieg, Shane Matthews, Cade McNown, Jim Miller, Rick Mirer, Moses Moreno, Kyle Orton, Jonathan Quinn, Steve Stenstrom, Kordell Stewart, Steve Walsh, Peter Tom Willis.
Enough said.
and despite all that Otter the Packers only had one more superbowl appearance over that time period.
im a huge broncos fan, im not happy at all, im also a Lakers fan and I feel the same way I did when Shaq was traded....at least in this one the Broncos got a lot more than the lakers did back then. Two first rounders and a third in the NFL is a big price...even if orton isnt any good, and by the way he never had the receivers in chicago that he'll have in denver.
Firesalt:
I guess you missed the whole 90 year rivalry between the Bears and Packers.
This is a great day and trade for the Bears. How much did the Giants give up to aquire Eli Manning; the 4th overall and 3rd in 2004 and 1st and 5th rds in 2005 for the 1st overall pick which they used on Manning.
I don't know about the rest of you people but I would easily select Cutler over Rivers and Manning. Look at the defenses both of the latter had to support them. That Giants D won the Superbowl for them. Rivers D when healty was a swarming bunch of ruffians.
A defense like the Bears that looked uninspired and unmotivated last year will return to form with a franchise stud as the leader of the offense if not the team. Cutler is coming home to play for his favorite team growing up as a kid in Santa Claus,IN. Well Christmas has come early in Chicago.
I thank Orton for his contribution over these last few years. The draft picks are trash and treasure. It depends who posseses them and Angelo has shown a penchant to pick up nice players in the later rounds as opposed to the 1st rd. Oh and just to round out this post we just signed Orlando pace who gave up 2 sacks last yr which will enable a move to RT for our 1st pick last yr, Chris Williams. Chicago will see you in the playoffs!
I think the Bears gave up way too much to get Jay Cutler. What exactly has this guy done to warrant that high of a cost? How many playoff games has Denver won with Cutler? And he also has the reputation, fair or not, as being a crybaby and a whiner. You know Bears fans are going to get on him in a hurry if he struggles, and I question how he's going to handle it; I see some Jeff George in the guy. Finally, Cutler had a stud WR in Brandon Marshall with the Broncos; I don't see any wideouts that scare anybody with the Bears. So I wouldn't just hand the NFC North to the Bears just yet.
How can a week 1 game between two teams that missed the playoffs last year be called "epic"?
Nicely done Otter. As a Bronco fan and somebody who tries to understand the game, I can not figure out how you trade a francise QB. I also can't figure out how Chicago didn't get a steal. He will be 26, went to the Pro Bowl, 4500 yards, 25 TDs to 16 int all without a running game and the 2nd worse D in the league.
The Broncos just robbed the Bears. They get rid of an overrated, petulant child of a quarterback, and get back two first round picks and a third round pick, as well as a guy who can compete with Chris Simms to be the transitional starter? Let's say the Broncos love Sanchez, they can move up and get him, spend the extra picks rebuilding the defense and be ready to contend in 2 years. The Bears have the clearest set of draft needs of just about anyone now. A wide receiver to complement Hester, a defensive end, a safety and a young OT to groom behind Pace. I bet they go very need based in this draft and attempt to shore up weaknesses to contend now. Too bad they gave up a king's ransom in consummating this trade, because they sure could use those picks to put a team around Cutler.
I can't believe it. Finally a legitimate QB in Chicago. When you compare the draft picks, time, money, and free agent hopefuls we've spent trying to get an established guy with as much up-side as Cutler, you'll realize that the Bears did not overpay for this. Given the opportunity, the Bears would prefer to not have 1st round picks anyway, and they usually miss on them when they use them. This is a great day for a great fanbase!
Since our prayers seem to be getting answered lately...If only the cubs can win the world series.
I don't know if the Bears gave up too much. If Cutler makes them a yearly contender, then I guess not. I see Cutler being worth Orton, a #1 and a #3. With the Bears signing Pace also, they are likely about maxed on the cap
This is one of those "good for both teams" sort of trades. Denver gets the ammunition to improve an awful defense and has a stop-gap QB in Orton to hold the fort until McDaniels finds the right guy for his system.
For Chicago and all the people who think they overpaid, remember this: Chicago hasn't had a franchise QB for more than 20 years. This fact cannot be underscored more. Did the loss of draftpicks hurt their ability to fill needs this year? Obviously. But they get a guy who can be THE guy for the next 10-15 years.
Interesting Cutler stat; in games in which the Denver defense held the opponent to 21 points or less, Cutler was 13-1 as a starter. That's just tremendous.
Someone earlier mentioned "why overpay and not make a play for Cassel?" The answer is simply that Cassel isn't as good.
While I have not been a fan of Ortons, he has gotten better each year. Add to that two things - #1 is that he played behind an inferior O line and had not much at the WR position and #2 - the Patriots took two late round draft picks (Brady and Cassel) and turned them into stars. I could easily see Ortons game getting much better. One more thought, Denvers D could get a whole lot better with those extra picks.
Marko is stating the key to making this deal work for Chicago - they need to be absolutely burning Holt's phone off the wall. They can get something comparable to Harrison in the late rounds this year but a legit receiver is a must to get the value out of Cutler.
Mr. Harrison and Mr. Holt, please report to O'Hare, please.
The Broncos are idiots! The Bears made out!
Denver will be no better than 3-13 this year, and probably won't break .500 for several years. In addition to the Bears 1st round picks, they may get the #1 pick overall next year because they'll suck so bad. Just a matter of time before McDummy is ran out of Denver.
Hopefully they'll be able to get enough young talent from this trade so their next coach will have something to work with.
Bears made out in this one. Orton won't have any more success in DEN than he did in CHI, he just doesn't have the arm strength to utilize marshall.
Bad news for GB they've had a hard enough time beating CHI the last couple seasons even with Orton/Grossman. Should make the NFC north more respectable though.
BTW, any fans calling Cutler a "cry baby" or something along those lines, epically those from Denver... I have two words for you:
John Elway
(though Eli works too)
And the last five 18th picks:
Joe Flacco
Leon Hall
Bobby Carpenter
Erasmus James
Will Smith
As long as Cutler doesn't wear #8, I love this deal.
And Jon... here's to 100 more years. Go Sox!
"I don’t know about the rest of you people but I would easily select Cutler over Rivers and Manning."
I wouldn't. In fact, I would take either of the other two over Cutler every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Hey, Coach McDiaperRash, you had better be right about this. If this blows up in your too-young-to-shave face, you won't be able to step foot in the state of Colorado EVER.
Comparing Cassell and Cutler is like comparing Rex Grossman and well, I guess, Cutler. No comparison. Cutler and Da BEARS!!!
Hey Denver, go to nfl.com and watch how Peyton Manning responds when things don't go his way, or Eli or Brady or any QB for that matter. The same things being said about Cutler have been said about every starting QB who ever threw an interception.
Orton had plenty of weapons to work with. hester, Olson, Forte....
That being said, Orton doesn't have the arm strength to utilize marshall and royal. He's not a downfield passer.
Sims will be your starter next year. I'd be surprised if Orton lasts more than a year in DEN.
unbelievable, i can't believe we actually traded cutler. as the anger subsides, i'm starting to think that we will actually be ok. cutler is a great talent and a hell of a lot of fun to watch, but he's also really hard to watch because he makes a lot of poor decisions with the ball. in that respect he is very favre like, but he can also be a whiny brat. go to nfl.com and watch the broncos games from last season and watch how culter reacts when things don't go his way,
in saying that, i would be lying if i said i didn't wish cutler and mcdaniels could have made nice. but that's old news now, he's gone. moving on......
the most frustrating thing about the broncos is the defense. i would be perfectly happy if we use all 3 of the draft picks we received on upgrading our defense and let simms and orton battle it out for the quarterback job. orton was decent last year for the bears with hardly any talent around him. simms led the bucs to the playoffs before the spleen injury, it is weird though that simms is making almost 3 times more than orton. the broncos offense is a quarterback's dream. marshall and royal on the outside, two really good young tackles, two good tight ends, and a history of running the ball. remember we did go to the afc championship game with jake plummer as our starting quarterback!
if mcdaniels can turn matt cassel into a quarterback after not playing since high school, who knows what he could do with two guys that have had some success in the nfl.
now, just fix the defense, let's put some pressure on the quarterback, stop the run, and force some turnovers. it may not happen next year, but in time with the right selections, the broncos could totally revamp the defense and maybe catch the chargers.
This makes the Patriots trading Cassel for a 2nd round pick look pretty bad...
The Cassel trade was a salary dump more than anything. The Pats needed to get his enormous franchise-player contract off the books so they could be active in free agency, and they've been quite active since then. If the Pats could have gotten a better deal in that time frame, they would have taken it. But with teams (as Lombardi says) reticent to pull the trigger on big trades like that, they had to take what they could get during the hot period of free agency.
Cutler thrived in Shanahan's system after 3 years of trying to learn it.That's why he complained so much about the Broncos firing the Offensive Coordinator. He's coming from a division that the Chargers won at 8-8. He QB'ed his team to a 7-9 record in a division we're he faced the Chiefs and Raiders twice, I know the Chiefs beat them once. And the Bears give up 2 first rounders a third AND Orton. BIG MISTAKE, CUTLER IS OVERRATED !!!! YOU'LL SEE...
You have to give plenty of blame to the DEN defense for that 7-9 record. Any QB who goes for 4400 y ards and 25 TD's isn't a bad QB. Orton had worse numbers and ended up 9-7, does that make him a better QB?
So Cutler will be reunited with Earl Bennet and Chris Williams who he played with at Vandy. That should help make the transition....
I have never seen a more drastic change in a franchise in one off-season than this year's Denver Broncos.
Three months ago: a hall-of-fame coach and an up-and-coming franchise 25-year old quarterback who was already top-10 at his position.
Now: a 32-year old rookie coach with a bottom of the barrel starter and a bunch of draft picks.
Anyone that says Denver made out is too enamored with the draft process right now. At least one of the first round QB's is a bust. We all know it. At least 10 other first rounders will be mediocre professionals. We know that from history as well.
The draft is a lottery. You can prepare all you want, but even the best have a high failure rate.
This is an absolute STEAL for Chicago. They can spend the next five seasons fixing all their age issues and still have a franchise QB from ages 30-35. It could take Denver 10 years to find a QB as good.
Unbelievable a QB of his caliber ever got on the open market. One of the biggest plunders I've seen a franchise make in the history of the NFL.
Shocked that the Bears stepped up, but they made a wise move. I think Cutler's going to be huge in Chicago.
"Shocked that the Bears stepped up, but they made a wise move. I think Cutler’s going to be huge in Chicago." Mike
Well said. You are one of the few critics of this deal that realizes the magnitude for both side. I guess some people dont realize how important a franchise QB is to a football team. I'll take young, proven, franchise QB over young and unproven talent in the draft any day of any year.
I don't like Cutler much, but he has some tools. Eli would've imploded in the same situation in Denver. Shanahan set the table in Denver - that horrendous D was mostly his doing. I hope he shanks every drive he takes...
I think the Bears just gutted themselves - 2 or 3 yrs from now, the lack of talent is going to hurt, badly.
cutler may be very good but 2 no 1's and a 3 and orton? can you say herschell walker and the vike cowboy trade. can anyone see teddy boy making that trade that's hilarious. teddy wouldn,t give up a 4 for moss or a 2 for gonzalez.

Reportedly, Cutler said he did not want to be traded. But he asked to be traded and was telling friends what team he wanted to go to. And this guy was mad because management wasn't honest with him?
