Report: Seahawks still interested in Brandon Marshall

Don’t get too caught up in the Santonio Holmes trade just yet, because another big-name receiver is back in the news.

And he goes by the name of Brandon Marshall.

Per a tweet from Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network, the Seattle Seahawks remain interested in trading for Marshall and that “talks could heat up this week.”

Marshall—who was hit with a first-round by the Denver Broncos—visited the Seahawks on March 6 to discuss the possibility of playing in Seattle. However, no deal between the two teams was ever reached.

The Broncos made it clear earlier this offseason that they would only accept a first-round pick in exchange for Marshall, but now that the market appears to be drying up—and the fact that the NFL draft is just ten days away—the team may be willing to settle for less.

Seattle currently owns the 6th and 14th picks in the first round.

Marshall has without question been one of the best receivers in the NFL over the past three seasons. From 2007-2009, the four-year veteran caught 307 passes (second in NFL) for 3,710 yards (sixth) and 23 touchdowns (12). One of the toughest wideouts in the league to bring down, Marshall set an NFL record for receptions in a single game when he hauled in 21 passes in a 28-16 loss at Indianapolis back on December 13.

Finding a way to land Marshall would be a huge move for new head coach Pete Carroll’s Seahawks. Seattle lost veteran wideout Nate Burleson in free agency and No. 1 receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh turns 33-years-old in September.

Add in the fact that the NFC West is wide open in 2010 and that Seattle’s division-rivals(St. Louis, San Francisco, Arizona) all ranked 21st or worse in passing defense last year, and you could make a case that the Seahawks would be the team to beat out west next season if they acquire Marshall.

Unfortunately, that could be a big “if.”
