Every Monday here at The National Football Post, I bring you my ramblings from the weekend games in the NFL. Today: The Giants run over Carolina, the Broncos choke, the Titans make a statement, Romo disappoints and more.
WEEK 16
Run, Derrick, Run: What a game in the Meadowlands last night, huh? If you couldn’t keep your eyes open in overtime, don’t worry, because the Carolina run defense was just as atrocious as it was in regulation. OK, now that the Giants have won home field for the NFC playoffs, can we admit they’re the team to beat? No? Wait, let’s look at the box score. The Giants ran for 301 yards as a team. Brandon Jacobs had three TDs and 87 yards, while Derrick Ward chipped in for 215 yards on — get this — 15 carries! Folks, rush defense like that won’t win in high school, so what makes you think it’s going to work in the NFL? Sure, Carolina has studs: Steve Smith, DeAngelo Williams (All-Pro Anyone?) and Julius Peppers, but if they can’t stop the run, they can forget about the Super Bowl. Before you start firing off e-mails, think about this: Before we take the crown away from the G-Men, someone is going to have to beat them — at their place. Going to be tough.
Texas Stadium Collapse- Not a good night to close out one of the greatest venues in NFL history, but the Dallas Cowboys didn’t come to play on offense, and their defense had better start working on some tackling drills — soon — because as crappy as they looked, they are still very much in this thing. And don’t tell me Tony Romo played solid, or even OK, because that was one of the worst performances I have seen from him. But let’s get off the Cowboys and talk about Joe Flacco and the Ravens — because they deserve it. Maybe it’s time to take this team seriously, as in, they could make some noise in January. Flacco, the rookie, looked like a veteran in the pocket, and that defense is awesome. How many times did Romo hit the turf Saturday night? Ten, maybe 15? Either way, they punished his butt all night, and Willis McGahee and La’Ron McClain showed Cowboys defenders that arm tackles don’t exactly work in the NFL. Tough night for Cowboys fans, old and young.
Titan Statement- I will probably hear it today about this Steelers team I’ve been raving about the last month, and with good reason. The Tennessee Titans stuck that football down the throats of Pittsburgh yesterday, my friends. I’ll admit it now, I have never been a big believer of this Titans’ team, but yesterday made me think about it a little. I still like the Steelers in January, but it’s hard not to notice the effect that defense had on Ben Roethlisberger. There would be no fourth-quarter dramatics, and besides the Ravens, this Tennessee club is about the only other team that can match up with the Steelers. No Albert Haynesworth, hey, no problem. Plug in Jason Jones (3.5 sacks). Who? Well, that is how good football teams do it, folks. They don’t make excuses, they just do their jobs. Big win, but I still have my doubts. I guess that’s what the playoffs are for — to answer questions.
Snowed Out- Two things I noticed in Seattle yesterday: One, I didn’t think it could resemble Lambeau Field with the weather, and two, Brett Favre and the Jets showed their true colors in the biggest game of their season. The Jets are now 0-4 on the west coast this year, and what was once an 8-3 season is now a debacle. That Favre deal looked so sweet a few months ago, but now I’m wondering if that deal is going to cost Coach Eric Mangini his job. I hate to say it, but if they don’t pull off an upset against the Dolphins next week (did I just say “upset” of the Dolphins?), Mangini has to go. His team has officially folded under the pressure of December football in the National Football League. Trust me, this time of the year can bring out the best or worst in coaches, players and teams. I just couldn’t imagine sitting here and writing this about a team that is led by the one and only Brett Favre. But I never thought the Cubs would get swept by the Dodgers this year, either.
Comeback Kid- Let’s stay on the AFC East for a couple of minutes, people, because as bad as Favre played yesterday, the guy he replaced under center, Chad Pennington, continued to prove every member of that Jets organization wrong. I’m sure Pennington has no problem waking up next to the ocean breeze this morning, maybe even taking a quick walk on the beach and reading his box score: 26 of 34, 235 yards, 3TDs, while laughing (loudly) at another Jets loss. This guy has it made. He is the quarterback of a first-place team, is having his best year as a pro, and now he gets to return to New York and beat his old team for the division title. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, One of those TDs he threw yesterday was to win it after bringing his team back in the fourth quarter. Yeah, life is pretty sweet for Mr. Pennington right now. I can’t wait to watch that game next Sunday.
Don’t Forget About Us- How can we forget about New England? We can’t, my friends, it’s not possible, because they’re still in it. A Dolphins loss and another win, and all of a sudden, we are looking at the AFC East champs — again. It helps that Matt Cassel has made people – well, at least me -- forget about Tom Brady for the moment (20 of 36, 345, 3TDs). I am about to ask if I can be his agent in the off-season so I can get 3 percent of that monster deal he’s going to cash in on. Plus, did anyone notice the weather in Foxborough yesterday? Snow, ice, wind. I don’t know if I could throw for 345 in my backyard in the snow, let alone in a December NFL game. But it helps that the Cardinals laid down like dogs. How can anyone justify this Arizona team as a divisional champion when it plays like that? Take away the 78-yard TD Matt Leinart (yes, Kurt Warner was pulled) threw to Larry Fitzgerald in garbage time, and the Cards would have walked out of New England with 108 yards of total offense. That is brutal.
Stay Classy, San Diego- OK, that was a cheesy intro, but what else can I say about the AFC West? A month ago, I was having a blast ripping apart this Chargers team and Norv Turner, but after beating the Bucs (who now have their own issues) in Tampa yesterday, the Chargers are one win from a division crown and a gift ticket to the playoffs, thanks to the Broncos (we’ll get to them in a moment). I’m starting to think that the snub Philip Rivers got last week when he didn’t make the Pro Bowl is for real. Check out these numbers on the road: 21 of 31, 287 yards, 4TDs. Not bad, considering Rivers was on the road against the Bucs, not the Lions or Rams. Forget about LT, because this is Rivers’ team, and he is the only reason they have a shot to play in January. By the way, what is going on in Tampa? Ever since they were run over in Carolina, this team looks average, at best. Jon Gruden can’t be happy.
Oh No, Broncos- How many chances do you want? That’s the question for Denver fans. Win a ballgame. Just one. Instead, the Broncos fell at home to the Bills, who had been free falling to the basement for the past two months. I know Broncos’ QB Jay Cutler is going to put up numbers every Sunday, but he couldn’t find a way to get the ball in the end zone when it counted in the fourth quarter. Sure, 359 yards is a nice day, but when you have a zero in the touchdown column, it really doesn’t matter. Instead of putting on those brand new AFC West champ hats and T-shirts in the locker room, the Broncos now have to travel to San Diego, probably lie down again, and watch the Chargers walk away with their championship. Hey, at least Dick Jauron can sleep for a week or so. If anyone needed a win, it was the Bills.
Falcons’ Clincher- How about that intro? I would have been fired if I’d written that in August, but Atlanta proved us all wrong with a win yesterday. Matt Ryan and his boys went up to the Twinkie Dome and clinched a playoff spot. It helps when your defense holds Adrian Peterson under 80 yards and causes four turnovers. This Falcons’ team is interesting to me, not because they are in the playoffs but because they can really beat anyone. Why? Well, they can run the ball, their rookie QB plays like a 10-year veteran, and that defense is pretty darn good. As for Minnesota, they better pay attention to that Bears-Packers game tonight because if the Bears win (which I am going to predict later today), then all of that December pressure is going to fall on their shoulders against the Giants. I don’t trust the Vikings at all.
Strike Up The Band- I bet Andy Reid and the Eagles felt really good when the Redskins band played “Hail to the Redskins” for the 27th time as they walked off the field yesterday at Fed Ex Field. Man, what an awful performance by Philly. Go ahead, Eagles’ fans, start blasting Donovan McNabb (again) today on talk radio and at happy hour, but maybe — just maybe — someone can tell DeSean Jackson that it’s December, Santa is coming to town, and now would be a good time to make a play — with the season in the balance. But it’s the same old story with the Eagles. They don’t have a big-time receiver. Instead, they have a rookie who runs his mouth and can’t catch. Very, very brutal. Even worse for the Eagles, Fred Smoot — the guy who doesn’t want to tackle — made the hit to save the game for Washington. Fred, you are still my boy, but you will probably sit in the cold tub all week after making that play.
Chasing Marino- I was disappointed with Drew Brees and Sean Payton yesterday. Sure, Brees had another big day (30-41-351-2TDs), but he could have thrown for 600 against the Lions if he was allowed to. I know it’s unprofessional to run up the score on an opponent, but when you play Detroit, it’s hard not to. C’mon, Coach Payton, let Drew air that thing out. I want to see Brees break Marino’s record. In other news, there were more empty seats at Ford Field than there would be at a Milli Vanilli reunion concert. They have to go 0-16 now. It just wouldn’t be right if they found a way to beat the Packers.
No A.J., No Chance- Hey, someone want to tell Matt Schuab that Andre Johnson is supposed to be the best receiver in the National Football League? Not only did Johnson finish with only 2 receptions for 19 yards, his performance also cost me my fantasy championship. I have to give some big-time credit to Oakland corner Nnamdi Asomugha, who is getting my vote for first team All-Pro, after he completely shut down Johnson. Houston was that feel-good story we see every year at the end of the season: play hard, go on a nice winning streak and build for next season. Not anymore. You can’t do that when you lose at Oakland in front of 10,000 fans.
San Fran Winner- Another comeback win for the Niners and Mike Singletary. Don’t you think it’s time to just give him the job for next season? Suddenly, the 49ers never give up and they play to win. Sounds like good coaching to me. I liked seeing Isaac Bruce — a true pro — reach another milestone inside the dome he used to dominate in a Rams uniform. I bet Rams fans were longing for those days back in St. Louis again.
Ohio Drama- C’mon, I was just joking about the “drama” part. Did anyone watch this game, because I couldn’t justify wasting a Sunday afternoon, even when your quarterback attempts only 9 passes and you still win — thanks to Bears cast off Cedric Benson and his 171-yard day. Golly, I bet both of these teams can’t wait for the season to end. I recommend Puerto Rico in January if any of those guys are listening.
Romo's first two picks were bad, but he still keep them in the game...
I wouldn't put all the blame on TR, becasue all our defense had to do was tackle on two straight runs up the middle.
I don't want to hear about how Romo did anything today...
He threw those 2 picks up in the air. He put his team in a hole. End of story.
Romo chokes when it counts. It's that simple. And I guess the Jets wished they had never traded Pennington away. My Packers will get a 3rd rounder now for Favre. Not that bad, although a 2nd rounder would've been better. I watched the game yesterday, and have to say it did show that Favre is old - and he certainly doesn't want to play in bad weather anymore. That INT was horrendous. Giants - I don't know. They have a great run game, yes, but should Jacobs get injured then the whole game changes for them. They also have a good OL, and that helps. But I am not totally sold on them. there is lots of football left before the SB, and somehow I have the feeling the Giants will not make it there this time.
Dre, Westbrook and McNabb shot down my super bowl chances, too. There's always next year, right? Geez, I feel like the early 90s Buffalo Bills right now.
Romo was bad but Garrett's play calling was pretty crappy, too. Phillips pressure defense is good when it works but we all got to see what happens if the RB breaks through the line and you've got all 11 guys on the line of scrimmage. Not sure they had to play that much pressure, especially on the first TD run when there was plenty of time left. I've been saying Dallas would win 2 of the last 4 to barely make the playoffs but they won't beat Philly playing like they did Saturday.
what did I say about tampa's D matt?
Sammy- You got me guy....
They gave me -6 ponts on the day, but Andre Johnson killed me. All he needed was a TD anmd I would have won my fantasy league.
Good call.
B Roo-
I am starting to think that Garrett might not be the "guy" in Big D anymore.
Peter-
All you have to do is look at Romo's record in December. You can't get around that one.
If Romo gets this team into the playoffs, does the discussion change?
Interesting issue here with a dose of karma. Does Mangini help BB into the playoffs after striking him down with spygate? No question it's a must win, whether for pride, job security, or WC berth. I don't think they'll be glancing up at the scoreboard to see how Ravens are doing.
Whether or not Pats make it, it has been a great run. This is a team with great character- they had every reason in the world to fold and call it quits, but they didn't.
"IF" he gets them in, and "IF" he can win a playoff game...
He needs to worry about the Eagles, on the road, first.
PP-
I think Mangini should try and win that one so he doesn't have to clean out his office after the game.
Mangini has to win that game, and I think Brett has a big day.
We are going to the playoffs, again.
Matt- You have a prediciton on the Bear-Packer game tonight?
I do:
Bear 31
Pack 13
Coach- Have a preview coming out later today.
I think you will like it.
Da Coach - it'll be cold and windy tonight. Remember last year? You are giving my Packers too much credit...
I can't get the game up at Lambeau out of my mind Peter....
That was a beating
Watching that game last night made me envious of the dominating O-line that the Giants have. The way they ran the ball down the Panthers throats in overtime with so much at stake was awesome. I hope Ted Thompson was watching, because that's the type of line we desperately need. I hope we finally drop the zone-blocking scheme and bring in some physical maulers who can dominate in the trenches on the Frozen Tundra.
One of "those" weeks in straight-up office pools. Worse than week 12.
Coach, I think you're wrong with the score:
Bears 31
Pack 28
Packers lose another game late in the 4th after taking the lead and their D can't stop the Bears who go right down the field and score the winning TD.
- What the heck, we might as well use a script we all know.....
Sean - we already have one on the roster. Josh Sitton. Saw the kid in training camp, I am not sure he lost any 1-on-1. Immensely strong, and he is quite big also. Unfortunately he got injured and then they wouldn't let him in the rotation unless someone was injured, but when he played he did pretty well. I'd play Spitz at C and ditch Wells, more poewr, more weight in the middle. Colldge at LT, pick up a big LG in FA, and unfortunately we'll probably need a new RT, either via FA or trade, since I don't think Tausch will come back. But you ar right, time to get some bigger OLinemen. That and DL are our weaknesses. Good OL and DL can really cover weaknesses in other areas.
Da Coach - don't you think your Bears will be extra motivated because of that beating?
Paul - and afterwards, McCarthy will talk about "pad level too high" and "we get that cleaned up" in his press conf... I don't know why he is not taping his statements. Aside from the injury updates at the beginning, he might as well do those first and then just play a tape with the same questions and answers... Would save him and everybody involved a lot of time...
Peter-
They sound like it from the media sound bites I have listened to this week.
Lost of talk of redemption here in Chi Town.
Peter-
Don't the Packers prefer to build through the draft instead of free agency? I don't see them brining in veterans that often.
Peter-
I hear you on Fat Mac...
Dude will say anything to avoid the obvious.
Matt,
Thompson brought in a couple free agent guards in his first season, Matt O'Dwyer and Adrian Klemm, and they flopped. That may be why he hasn't signed any free agent O-linemen since then, but after this disappointing season I think he'll have to take some risks in free agency, or trade for somebody. He can't just rely on the draft alone, I think that's obvious.
So dissapointed with the Vikes yesterday. What's with Purple Jesus' fumbles? Real question - Will Tom Coughlin have the Giants go all out against us next week?
Matt - yes, Ted Thompson does. But if he is putting on blinders and wants to pretend that he doesn't need FAs now, then nobody can help him. Next season his job will be on the line also if everything will go down the drain like this one. His draft record is not that good either. One can say build through the draft, and I have to admit he did a nice job upgrading roster spots 25 through 53, but how many impact players did he bring in during his 4 drafts? Nick Collins, Greg Jennings, Mason Crosby are very good players. Rodgers - too early to tell, Blackmon is a decent returner. I see potential with Colledge (at LT), Brandon Jackson (if they let him play), James Jones, Rouse, Desmond Bishop (same as with Jackson), Jordy Nelson, and Josh Sitton, whether they'll make it or not remains to be seen. Everybody else are just guys in the NFL, nothing special. And let's say Tausch cannot come back or is not resigned. Who are we gonna play at RT next year? Tony Moll or Breno Giacomini??? I guess it is time to spend a little in FA, on both OL and DL. Just my opinion of course. I don't see it happening, that's why people here are so frustrated with Ted, but I think you cannot rely on draft alone...
"I just couldn’t imagine sitting here and writing this about a team that is led by the one and only Brett Favre."
What was surprising about what he did, it's what he always has done. Throw way too many balls up for grabs and hope for the best. He did it as a rookie, he did it in Super Bowls and he's doing it now.
There's is only "one and only" Brett Favre because every other QB who plays that way is out pumping gas or sitting on the bench somewhere, just like they should be.
Matt, just wanted to thank you for bringing up the Cubs getting swept by the Dodgers. Even though it's like 5 degrees here in Milwaukee, that was a little ray of sunshine. Can't wait to watch tonights game , going to a bar that has become a sort of ad hoc Bears bar. There's gonna be more smack than a party at Keith Richards house. Happy Holidays to all of you
"I have to give some big-time credit to Oakland corner Nnamdi Asomugha, who is getting my vote for first team All-Pro, after he completely shut down Johnson"
I told you a few weeks ago that Nnamdi deserved that slot on your Tuesday All-pro writeups.
He's incredible.
Agree with you about Sitton, Peter. It will be interesting to see how he does in training camp next year, hope he doesn't have a "sophomore slump" like Allen Barbre did. And I think it's very likely that Thompson will draft Tauscher or Clifton's eventual replacement with our probable top-10 pick, unless there's a strong pass rusher available.
Guy was good Gerry
SJG- A little too far fetched there guy. He has won 3 MVP's and a Super Bowl.
Let's not judge his whole career after one game now. Besides, Romo "throws it up" all of the time and he has a $60 Million dollar contract.
Matt in Minny- I don't think Coughlin ever gives himself a day off, so I have to belive that most of the Giants studs will see action.
Peter: MM is taping his post games--can't u tell he's wearing the same shirt.
If TT wouldn't spent 3.2 mill to keep C Williams, an "inhouse draftee", he's NOT gonna pay for a LT/RT. (Pete you forgat Tramon.) And what the hell happened to Rouse? moving woodson to safety? what he do hit on MM wife??
BTC - that's a good one :)
Matt - SJG has a valid point here. Don't get me wrong. Favre was a great player. But I also have to say, nobody else has ever gotten as many excuses from media as #4. Remember those talking heads on the Fox Pregame show, especially Bradshaw a few weeks ago? "Packers record with Favre would be 8-2 right now." Ridiculous. He obviously didn't watch any game this year. Unless Favre can line up at DT also, or LB, the record would be more or less the same as is right now. I have been watching a lot of football games in the past few years, and every time a QB throws an INT, commentators don't hold back if it was a terrible throw - unless it was Favre. People are going out of their way to find somebody else - Receiver didn't run the right route, OL couldn't hold off the pass rush etc. It was never Favre's fault. Until this season. This season, away from cozy Green Bay where is was untouchable, people are finally calling him out. Since he did have his fair share of terrible throws. I cannot tell you how frustrating it was as a Packers fan watching another postseason go down the drain with another #4 INT, throwing into triple coverage when other WRs were wide open. All I can say is, I think he was fun to watch and I have very fond memories, at the same time when it comes to the greatest QBs of all time, he does not make my top 5. Not even close.
BTC - Corey Williams was one of Sherman's draft picks. And Ted thought that if he is giving him the money, he'd hang it up and just become lazy. And we already have a highly paid lazy DT on the team - Harrell. Rouse was injured and wasn't 100%, and Woodson did a decent job, but that took the best CB out of the CB spot. But yes, unfortunately I think Ted won't open the cash box. We will see another season go by and will have to hope the executive committee will make a move at GM before it will get better. All his and McCarthy's statements in the last 3 weeks let me believe that they have no intention of going after FAs this spring either.
Peter-
Superstars always get a pass in the media guy. We all know that.
Even the Dallas media is blaming J Garrett and his play calling in spite of Romo's performance.
I, however, have no issue with placing the balme where it belongs.
Brett has had an awful season.
Matt - that's why I like the NFP. Unfiltered, valuable information and opinion :)
Matt,
Glad you are calling it like you see it. I am tired of hearing about the overrated Cowboys and the East. Yes, I will plug my South now.:) The Falcons have a chance to continue the trend of worst to first and get a first round bye. Petrino and Vick are starting to seem like a very long time ago.
On Pennington and the Fins, they probably can't think about the game as their still thawing out.:) Of course, that is easy to do when it is 70 degrees out. Man, I need to get back down there.
Do NOT cry about losing Corey Williams. A) We did not "lose" him. We got a draft pick for him. B) Cedric "the Entertainer" Benson just ran for 171 yards on that d-line. Enough. Said.
btw, the Pack WILL lose to the Lions next week. Bank it.
And, Matt, Favre is still a legend and everything, but this in not the first time he's folded late in the season by any stretch of the imagination. It goes back almost ten years when he threw 6 picks in a playoff loss to the Rams in, I think it was '99. Since then, he has been a pick machine in every final game of the post-season. Every single one. Look it up.
Dan - fact is, Corey Williams was the only one of our DTs who got pass rush ability inside. 14 sacks, 7 each the past 2 seasons, and that has not been replaced. Yes, the Packers did get a 2nd rounder for him, but it was used on Brian Brohm. 'Nuff said.
No, it is not "nuff said." It's way too early to judge Brohm. And, again, how is Corey Williams doing this year? It was feared that he might go soft after getting his payday. The fact is that he's played like crap this year. Granted, we need good d-lineman, but having more crappy ones doesn't get us anything. We've already got plenty of those.
Eric Green,
NFC South is good but no way the East is "overreated". They had a clean sweep of the South this year. Giants beat Panthers, Cowboys beat Bucs, Skins beat Saints and Philly beat Falcons.
Doubts? About the Titans? Gah! We've won 13 games!
All the Titans and Titans fans have been hearing ALL YEAR is - "fluke", "not playing winning teams", "Colts key players hurt", "Big Ben shoulder problem", yada yada yada.
We've beaten 12 different teams. TWELVE. We beat the ENTIRE AFC North. We beat the ENTIRE NFC North. Not to mention we beat the OTHER THREE TEAMS in the AFC SOUTH. We didn't get to play the WORST divisions in the NFL (AFC West, NFC West) - because if we HAD, we'd surely be undefeated. Houston is a great team, and they are a team that is very familiar with us - so it goes without saying that EVERY SINGLE YEAR there is a chance for them to beat us.
The Jets? They were on fire that week. They beat the **** out of us.
So that is ONE GAME that we completely lost. One.
Somebody give me a Terrible Towel. I'll stomp on it all day long, make a video, post it on YouTube all the while telling Bill Cowher to take a pill. Another "Gah!" to Bill Cowher. What a crybaby homer.
GO TITANS.
b roo,
You make a good point, but all those games where at home for the East. How does that happen? None of those games were blowouts either. I concede that the East is a good division, but I am sick of hearing how great it is. Why was Fox's #1 team doing Phill/Was instead of NE/Ari, Atl/Min, or Tampa/SD?
Yeah,
You are correct. Titans haven't gotten nearly enough credit this year. It was funny how everyone annoited the Jets the best team in the NFL after that victory.
