Yesterday’s Raiders vs. Chargers game gave us some positive plays but also presented penalties by veterans and scant third down conversions.  Sound familiar?  It is a real shame because just like the Bills’ game, the Raiders played well enough to win.  But the Chargers weren’t without dumb penalties, either.  The Raiders were given a gift when San Diego erroneously lined up directly over Jon Condo on the field goal attempt.  I love this rule and I wish the League hadn’t waited until my 9th year to implement it.  Because of their mistake, the Raiders could have taken three points off the board, rolled the dice and scored a TD.  But the penalty bug passed back over to the Raiders and a holding call stopped them cold.

Contrary to the drama and overall doom and gloom that have permeated the articles, posts and blogs, there is one thing we can all be happy about: JaMarcus Russell.  He is the future of this franchise.  He played a strong game yesterday.  I am amazed by his arm strength and eventually the clock in his head will adjust so he will know when to just take the ball and run.  Because of his timing progression, he knows when his receivers are supposed to come open.  But because he’s a giant, he can easily run for a couple of first downs.  I used to remind Gannon before we left the huddle “don’t forget about your legs, man” because the best way to demoralize a defense is to have a scrappy QB slip out of the pocket and run for a new set of downs.

On a personal note, I love Seabass like a brother but one of these days he is going to quit letting the coach talk him into absurd field goal attempts.  Crazy attempts like the 76-yarder he tried for yesterday only hurts his percentage for the year.  Seabass needs to understand at the end of the season, when all the players vote for the Pro Bowl, they refer to a list the teams’ PR guys distribute to aid in their selections.  All we would look for was the kicker’s FG percentage for the year.   But if going to the Pro Bowl isn’t on his to-do list, he should remember kicking those out-of-reach field goals means maybe taking out one of the offensive linemen.  O-linemen aren’t used to running such long distances at a high tempo.  Hauling 300+ pounds downfield threatens hamstrings and heads.  Because few o-linemen know how to keep their heads on a swivel; defensive return teams nearly salivate at the chance to knock someone’s block off.  But I am happy for Seabass because he looks like he has all the confidence in the world to make his kicks.  I know it may not be much to hang your hats on Raider faithful but for this week, at least, it sure beats being a Rams’ fan.

Addendum

With today's firing of Kiffin, being a Raiders fan no longer beats being a Rams' fan this week.

A 76 yard attempt is absurd. I suppose under ideal conditions, perhaps, a 70 yarder MIGHT be justifiable. But get real.

From ESPN's NFL Live - Jags DE Richard Collier, who was shot 14 times on Sep 2, is paralyzed from the waist down and had to have a leg amputated. Good luck to him.

Being a Raiders fan its only a matter of time every week for them to give the game away. 2 quick points:

1. I thought Al Davis was on his way down the elevator to fire Kiffin at halftime after Seabass' 76 yd attempt.

2. The thing that killed the Raiders was the DEF being on the field all of the 3rd Quarter. You just can't do that. 3 and outs kill your DEF.

oh and where was mcfadden the 2nd half?

McFadden was dinged, he took off his right shoe and was considering a soft cast at one point in the 2nd Qtr wasn't he?

Seabass can make it from there in warm ups, with the wind at his back. It was just something to do, that kind of stuff is a wake up signal to your players that you'll try anything to win.

For FG of that range you should have the punt team in for blocking, to cover the possible return.

Jamarcus tried to run several times and got hit from every direction. His speed is too slow for that to be effective. Gannon was once considered as an extra punt returner. Jamarcus might be an extra fullback or guard if it wasn't for his arm.

As for the holding call, Green pancaked Jackson and he flailed his arms for a penalty call. Later the end face masked the same blocker and the blocker was called for holding in response, on the very same play.

Sands and Warren had their pads pulled out of their jerseys all game.

It's OK if you are not a Raider.

The past Raiders would surpass the calls and play with enough intensity to match it. Emotionally they were there, the execution was lacking most of the time.
San Diego left points all over the field. Their back dropped a TD pass, the special teams miscued.

They only had two flags through like the first three quarters of play. You'd have thought it was a game in San Diego.

Sands was monstrous, as was Warren. Warren left the game late though, hope to see him return well.

Side note- Sam Williams still can't cover or tackle. Richardson still loses his gap. It's sad when you hold yourself up to keep from falling and let a guy run through your gap unchallenged. His first time ever on the field he lost his gap for a cutback run, why is he still wasting space out there?

Thanks Adam. I agree on Russell. He played a solid game yesterday. A lot of the mistakes that he made are common for first year starters and will be corrected as he gets more experience.

While there is a lot of negativity surrounding the Raiders right now I am excited about the talent the Raiders have at the skill positions. Russell, McFadden, Bush, Miller and Higgins have all flashed play-making ability. With experience and an offseason to upgrade the OL and to find a #1 WR there is a lot to be excited about.

Doug,
Kinda puts the Raiders' drama in perspective, doesn't it? Thanks for the update.

I think your right, Russell looks very promising and what an arm. I think as he gets more & more relaxed in the pocket he will see the running lanes and open field to graze on. He was a bit confused when he ran for the goal line. But that will change. Gannon ran most late in his carrer. But it will come with time. He looks very poised as a rookie and progress is made every week. Can't wait to McFadden & Huggy Bear are healthy. Tell Gannon The Nation Says Hello He's a great Broadcaster. Hey Next Week can we get you to talk about your experience With Mr Al Davis. What is really going on?

Hey Adam,
I think the next few weeks/months are going to be really interesting. Al Davis made some very pointed accusations against Kiffin that he now has to legally back up. The letter was presented in response to a lie that Kiffin had been saying the last 3 weeks. That lie was, "I have not had any communication with Mr. Davis since before the season." But that letter, also made some more accusations that Davis has to legally prove.

Kiffin's response on ESPN proves (to me) that Al was right about Kiffin being the one who was talking to Chris Mortensen. I think Kiffin's response was weak too.

I think Al has evidence to back his claims, I don't know if it is strong enough to get away from paying him nothing though. I think in the end, both Davis and Kiffin are going to look really, really bad; and it wouldn't surprise me if this is the springboard that the NFL uses to try and remove Al as owner.

Al did what he did based on Kiff's continual badmouthing. Given his legal smarts, I doubt Al would tell a boldface lie. Also, Kiffen didn't directly answer any questions in his BSPN response. As a result, I think Al likely told the truth. Given this, I'm glad Kiff is gone. He was angling from the beginning (ie Ark job) and never wanted Jamarcus, who I believe has the poise and skill to be great. Go Raiders!

Adam,

Help us understand the madness of the coaching carousel. Coming from a Dolphins fan, it amazes me that these coaches come sit in the seat, get their moment of fame and are gone quickly with millions in their pockets.

Is it that Al picks coaches he knows he can eventually fire, or is it that the only coaches that coach the Raiders are those who know they will eventually be fired? Either way, the results are the same....fans waiting....hoping....searching for someone to come in and make them feel good about wearing the team jersey.

The bad news is that I live in Texas, the good news is the COWBOYS LOST! The worst news is now I have to listen to the whining fans when people laugh at the Cowboys for losing!

Go Dolphins!
