Sanchez aiming to be ready for opener, Ryan to make final call

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is aiming toward getting back in time for the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He's got a bruised shoulder and is unlikely to practice this week.

“That’s the goal, so just keep our fingers crossed and take it day to day,” Sanchez said. “I’m obviously not happy that I’m hurt. I felt like I was putting together a good camp. So it’s an unfortunate thing, but there’s no time to gripe about it, you just gotta rehab as hard as I can.”

Jets coach Rex Ryan and Sanchez decline to elaborate on the nature of the injury, which was sustained when Ryan made an ill-advised move to play the starter after Geno Smith left the game following three interceptions.

“I’m not going to go through the details of the shoulder injury," Sanchez said ."I’m just going to say, you guys obviously know, I have an injured shoulder and we’ll take it day-to-day and I’m trying to get back for Week 1."

Why was Sanchez even in the game in garbage time playing with backups?

“Look I’m a competitor, and as a player it’s not my job to worry about when you’re going in, who’s in, whatever, what string this or that," Sanchez said. "If they call your number you got to play. That’s what I do, that’s what I’ve always done. They said to be ready to play and I was ready to play. I’m not here to second guess the coaches. If they call you to play, you better be ready to play. And I was.”

Ryan said he's not being evasive about the injury to Sanchez.

“I think I’m being pretty open when I say it’s a shoulder injury and he’s day-to-day and won’t play in the Philadelphia game,” Ryan said. “I think that’s being pretty open about the injury. It’s not that I’m saying he’s got a wrist injury when it’s clearly a shoulder. Or it’s a leg when it’s not a specific thing.”
