Just a quick update out of Green Bay, I’m hearing that the Packers are interested in restricted free agent safety Anthony Smith.  While I have yet to receive confirmation, I’m hearing that a realistic possibility exists the Packers may sign him to an offer sheet.

A 3-year veteran out of Syracuse University, Smith has spent his entire career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.  He’s amassed 106 tackles and 4 interceptions in his career.

Smith’s best season came in 2007, when he racked up 69 tackles and 2 interceptions in 10 starts for the Steelers.

More on this story as it develops.

I wonder if the team isn't expecting Atari to recover 100%. We seemed to be stocked at safety last year before injuries hit the team.

I think part of it is that the new D coaches have seen enough tape to know that both Atari and Rouse are coverage liabilities at this point.

The Packers are targeting safeties that can cover in addition to tackling..

Also, I think the Pack might have some uses for Rouse in or near the box in sets.. cross between a backer and a safety... utilizing the unique size/speed ratio that Rouse possesses.

Depth is always a great thing...

This would be a very solid signing for us. At just 25 years old, Smith has a good amount of experience in the 3-4. Low risk, high reward type of move.

Anthony Smith is an UFA, he can sign with anyone he wants to. The Steelers did not tender him.

If the Packers are looking for coverage skills, this guy is not the one for you. Tackling - yes, coverage - stinks. His lack of intelligence in coverage is why he was benched, not to mention his poor understanding of authority. Watch Patriots-Steelers game, 2007.

I hope the Pack coaches could knock some sense into him, because he has the talent to play. Too bad the Steelers couldn't knock it into him.

Wow! Smith, he'll help the pack D finally get off the field!
Seriously I hope this is Ted Thompsons last season with us. Not only is he doing a bad job, he is mostily hated by fans. Season ticket list moved up 100 spots this last year. Green Bay will become the Siberia of the NFL, if they don't send him packing!

His not a RFA, he is a UFA

Why is it that Farvists like bringbackWolf, no matter what the topic, always have to bring up their hatred of Ted Thompson?

FYI, the Packer season ticket waiting list is over 100,000 long, so a movement of 100 represents nothing.

And not all Packer fans hate Thompson. Why don't you people grow up?

Not everyone hates Ted Thompson. So the list move up a hundred spots and you just assume that all those people hated TT. Did you ask all of those hundred people why there name was taken off.

People took there names off the list because of the economy. I assume they remove people's name off the list that have died.

When will Packer nation heal..

I look at it this way, Ted and Co fail to improve this team in the 09 season.. yes winning is everything.. then he will be no more.

So, if the Packers win this year, all is good. If they lose, the next GM comes in with a talented young team and can put his touches on it to finish the project with salary cap to work with.

It is a win win..

Only the vocal minority hate Ted Thompson. The people who think Favre was 100% blameless for the retirement situation, and think Free Agency equals free online poker. Max bet your sixes over to the Washington Redskins fan base.

I love steady Teddy, he is doing a great job building the Packers to be competitive EVERY year. You can't be competitive every year if you waste a lot of money on free agents. I want to see the Packers in the playoffs next year but not if it means struggling for the next 5.

bringbackWolf... "mostily hated by fans."

mostily isnt a word first of all. even though I think I mostily hate you and others who have no reason to hate Thompson.

and when a season ticket waiting list moves up 100 spots on 60,000 person list... its a drop in the bucket. the list moves about 70-100 spots every year from deaths or financial reasons. But a mouth breathing lynch mob doesn't have time for facts.

He is doing a fine job, and Wolf is beaming with pride.

Is this the same guy that was talking all kinds of trash before the Patriot game in 2007, and then got burned by Brady repeatedly?

Oh brother!!

why does anyone with any football knowledge hate thompson? cause he is a egotistical idiot who does not seem to care about improving the team at all. just he does it his way, he will not change because he thinks his way is the only way. get used to more losing seasons to come packer fans.

okay i will try the tt lovers point of view. thompson is smart because he wont over spend on free agents. he builds through the draft. he likes to stay at least 25 mill below the cap at all times so he can sign resign his own players.my question is does winning mean anything,do the fans mean anything.and with losing comes unhappy players, do you think jennings will resign? if not that may be teddy's last nail in the coffin.

gbjoe must really be Ted Thompson's mother. How else could he know how "egotistical" he is. This line has been used by ignorant Favre lovers ever since last summer with no basis in reality.
Ted Thompson is a professional with a job to do. Whether you like it or not he will do what he thinks is best for the Packers even if the fans don't understand why.
If people like gbjoe were allowed to chart the Packers course we would end up like the Lions with Millen, signing every overrated scrub on the market and praying for good results.

Greg Jennings, Nick Collins, Tramon Williams, Darren Colledge, Ryan Pickett, Charles Woodson, Johnny Jolly, AJ Hawk, Jason Spitz, Ryan Grant, Atari Bigby, Donald Lee, Korey Hall, Brady Poppinga, Jordy Nelson, Josh Sitton, Mason Crosby, Brandon Chillar, etc., etc.

TT haters love to point to Harrell but conveniently forget the 90% of the time when he knocks it out of the park.

I don't like every move he makes but I'm not dumb enough to think I know more about football than a career scout.

TT isn't going anywhere, but please keep posting, your tears are delicious.

So glad to see some level headed Packer fans on here. We need to stick together and try to get rid of this 15 year old "Packer Fans"(Favre fans). Big things are about to happen in GB, so these little kids will just have to jump back on the bandwagon and stop praying that Favre comes back.

In Ted we trust!

milltown 1 question do you enjoy watching the packers lose? do you not think the gm and coaching staff should be held accountable? do you not think your man teddy should improve the team?

milltown

Apparently you would rather have Jerry Jones running the Packers gbjoe?

I too was hoping Olshansky would be a good fit but the Packers just weren't interested, all I can do is assume that they know something I don't.

Last year sucked, I watched every game. My heart broke with every 4th quarter loss. It looked bad, but it wasn't as bad as it looked. They outscored their opponents on the year despite going 6-10. There were only 2 games all year where were soundly beaten (saints and cowboys).

Let me be clear, I think the Packers need to sign a couple guys, but I also thought we needed to sign a couple guys after we went 8-8. We didn't sign anybody, and went 13-3 the next year. Have some faith in the professionals.

GBJoe, 3 words. Hooked-on-phonics. Olshansky is an arrogant loser, there's a reason why no one went after him outside of the Cowboys.

http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/packers.html

There's a reason why Ted was recommended for the job by Ron Wolf, there's a reason why he was voted the best GM in the NFL in 2007 by his peers, there's a reason why he's paid millions of dollars to do his job. There's also a reason why your sitting in your ninja turtle pajamas bashing our GM, it's because he got rid of me, myself, and Favre.

I don't hate Ted. He frustrates me at times, but the guy isn't that bad. He is just building a team the way a small market team does it. We aren't the Cowboys ladies and gentlemen. Settle down. We'll be fine, as long as the defense is at least in the top 20 overall.
