Poor Cleveland.  They get a fantastic game out of new quarterback Brady Quinn, build another comfortable second half lead, and tank the game in the fourth quarter…again.  A big congratulations to all the Jay Cutler owners out there.  That fantasy performance has you set up very nicely heading into Week 10.  Now to business.  The end of the work week is finally here which means it’s time for your Friday edition of Start Em vs. Sit Em.  For any of you who missed the official announcement of the “Alumni Showdown Bet” between myself and Matt Bowen, click here

START EM

DeAngelo Williams    RB    Carolina Panthers:  In the last 48 hours, Williams’ value for this weekend’s game at Oakland has shot through the roof.  Word out of Carolina is that rookie running back Jonathan Stewart has an injured heel and has been sitting out of practice this week, leaving his availability for Sunday’s game up in the air.  Should D-Will end up with the bulk of the carries this weekend, expect a very productive performance.  The Raiders are currently the NFL’s 30th ranked rushing defense, allowing 157.6 yards and 25.1 points per game.  In addition, the team is currently in complete turmoil.  Owner Al Davis released over-priced CB DeAngelo Hall this week in an effort to get the team focused and back on track.  Unfortunately, the 6-2 Panthers are on a mission themselves and should drop the hammer on the Black Hole early in the contest.  Expect healthy doses of Williams throughout the game in an effort to control the clock and protect the lead Carolina will build starting early in the first quarter.  Start Em.

SIT EM

Joseph Addai    RB    Indianapolis Colts:  This is clearly one of the more obvious Sit Em’s this week, but I received several questions about Addai yesterday, so I figured clarification was in order.  Addai and the Colts travel to Pittsburgh this weekend to take on the league’s most ferocious defense.  The Steelers are ranked first in total defense, first in passing defense and third in rushing defense.  They are giving up just under 15 points per game and have not allowed a 100+ yard rusher yet this season.  Keep this in mind.  While Addai will struggle this weekend, he is one of the best buy-low running backs on the market right now.  His 2008 numbers are way down and Addai owners across the country are not only fed up with what they’ve seen out of him so far this year, but they are already bracing themselves for another lackluster performance.  The good news for J.A. is his upcoming schedule.  With games against Houston, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit, Jacksonville and San Diego still remaining, Addai will have plenty of future opportunities to put up the first round numbers we all expected from him back in August.  If you are in need of a reasonably priced high-ceiling RB, this is your guy.  Get it done before Sunday.

Joe,
Incredible call you made on Eddie Royal last night! Keep up the good work.

Joe:

Yesterday, we agreed on putting Jon Stewart in for Slaton this weekend. However, JStew is in a walking boot and not practicing. So, do I go back to a healthy Slaton against BAL or take my chances that, if Stewart does play, he may not get the usual # of reps? I know it’s Oakland, but he can’t do much if he’s on the sidelines…

Also, how concerned should I be about Lynch’s matchup against NE? I could sit him and play DeSean Jackson in his place… Would love your feedback on that too.

Just last week finished a six-pack of the Yuengling Lager compliments of a family member - great brew! I hope you win, but if not, I want to know where Matt’s kegger is ’cause I will be there!

Thanks for your insight - it’s helping me hold on to 1st place in my division.

Take care,
Brian D.

Brian D: i answered your question in the Thursday Throw Down article.

Utwrenn: im glad it worked out for ya. Royal looked great.

Anthony: I like Cotchery because he has a soft St. Louis defense. Nothing against Holmes, its just Roethlisberger is questionable, making him a tough start. I like Charles because SD has shwon they arent very good on run defense, but I expect them to get up early, forcing KC to abandon the run.

Joe:

Thanks for the info and the roster reco's. I'll go with Slaton over JStew and leave Lynch in over DJax.

Since your Nittany Lions beat my Buckeyes, I'm rooting for them to run the Big 10 table. Plus, I don't think the Hawkeyes have a chance against PSU anyway... Old Style it is!!!

Keep up the great work!

Hey Joe,

What kind of WR could Slaton net on the trade market? I think he's a must start RB1 and I should hold out for a stud WR?

Joe,

Thanks for the advice yesterday on starting Torain in my flex. But...

...Edwards is a bum. I am seriously close to just dropping him. I have no need for him. I probably won't start him the rest of the season, so what's the point in keeping him? I'd rather start Colston, Camarillo, or Avery every week. So much for the deal he had with Phelps where he would score 2 TD's for every gold medal. Braylon Edwards is a douche bag.

Joe,
Lots of decisions this week because of Steven "my thigh hurts" Jackson.

Pick 3 from Colston, Holt, Bowe, V Jackson.

Pick 2 from J Charles, Green-Ellis, Norwood.

And, K Curtis or J Charles?

Saw the other day that your Phils are interested in Matt Holliday. That is not even fair. Happy friday. Thanks.

Brian D: you got it. im glad you're on the bandwagon!

Cooper: If you can't swing Slaton for a top flight wide out, then dont trade him. He is worth a top 8 receiver without question.

Michael: I hear ya on Edwards. Before you drop him, see if anyone in your league is interested in trading. There should be at least one guy out there who thinks he's a good bye low, especailly since Quinn looked impressive last night.

Joey: Colston, Jackson, Bowe, along with Charles and Green-Ellis (how did your RB situation turn out like that?) Use Holt as your flex.

Matt Holliday? We just won the series without him. No need to bring that guy aboard. More pitching!!!

Well,
It's a 14 team league, so the talent is spread out pretty thin. I have Benson on bye this week. But, I usually am scraping for RB's, there just arent enough to go around.

Victorino

Holliday

Burrell

Joe, this could be the best first 6 in a lineup ever. You wont need any pitching. That's nasty.

Joe, I made the trade yesterday of Mewelde Moore(I don't have Parker) and Marvin Harrison to the FWP owner for Ryan Torain and Laverneus Coles. Now it looks like Torain is out for the season and Moore is starting!! Ugh.
The trade is still pending...should I try to rally support to get it vetoed, or is Coles still a good buy?
We start 3 RBs(I have AP, Addai, and MJD) and 3 WRs(I start Fitz, Jennings, and Hines Ward or Avery). Is Coles an upgrade over Ward and Avery? Does the trade still work for me?

Joe,

My running backs are Addai, Slaton, Rhodes, and Jonathan Stewart. I need to start two, unfortunately.

What should I do, other than pray Marques Colston actually shows up this week?

Thanks.

(On the bright side, Royal and Winslow stepped up for me last night.)

Joey: Pat The Flat is gone. His contract is up and we aren't paying big money for a slow left fielder who only hits .220.

Chris: That's a tough break, but you cant try to have it vetoed. Unfortuantely, that is just what happens sometimes in this game. Coles is a slight upgrade over Avery in terms of consistency, but he has less upside.

Bryan: so far you are off and running this week with Royal and Winslow. You have to go Addai and Slaton. rhodes is now a backup and Stewart may not play due to a heel injury. Play it safe.

Sean: I'd go with breaston against a soft SF defense.

joe, the trade has a 2 day review period in which owners have a chance to veto a trade. We are in the middle of that now. It takes 4 to veto, I was just wondering if I should encourage people to vote against it now?

Thanks for the help, Joe.

Trades should only be vetoable if there is collusion, right? At least that's how it's done in our league.

Your thoughts on Sidney Rice? 1 catch for a TD, but otherwise nothing.

Would you start Eli Manning or Marc Bulger this week? Eli's got a tough matchup, and Bulger's is more favorable, but I don't know.

Do I start Willis McGahee or pick up Darby from the Rams and start him....

Hi Joe;

who's the better play this week; Jacobs vs Giants or C Johnson vs the Bears? I already played Lewis. Could the Browns have had a WORSE game plan for Jamal? Pound it north and south, and don't get cute, how hard is it?

Also, you think Jacobs for Boldin is a fair deal?

Should i start the jags defense vs lions or jets defense vs rams. Both offenses are terrible but now that jackson is out for rams, i might pick them up.

Yusef, I've got some issues at my 2nd wr spot. Must choose one between this motley crew: Desean J, Reg Brown, Meacham, K Walter and Ginn. Walters season trend has him having a big game but I'm thinking that with a 2nd string qb against the Ravens, prolly not happenin.
Also, I'm leaning towards Hightower and Gore and benching Forte. Would you agree with that?

Chris: you should try to get people to vote against it. Im not sure how "ethical" people in the league will view this, but its not to your advantage to have that trade go through.

BobbyZ: I'd start Mewelde Moore and Marc Bulger

Jackie Chan: I'd go with the same three, but the Philly passing game could struggle. The Giants have a great pass rush, so this will be a tough game for McNabb.

Patrick: Mewelde Moore

cooper: im not high on Rice. He hasnt shown anything yet, and in addition, Berrian has become the stud in Minny.

Brad: I'd go with Eli. The matchup is tougher, but he tends to have success when he plays in Philly.

Kevin: thats a tough spot, im sorry to hear that. I'd go with McGahee.

James: i would start Johnson against the Bears. In addition, i think that is a very reasonable trade: a quality WR1 for a quality RB1. good deal.

I'm not a big fan of Jamal Lewis. the guy is too slow and is always late hitting the hole

Ricky Bobby: I'd go with the Jags. Culpepper is starting tomorrow. I cannot see him having a good game.

Fighting: I agree with your RB selections. The WR question is a tough one. I want to say Ginn because he has the best matchup/situation, but he has proven to be unreliable. D-Jax may be your best bet.
