Random Things I Learned Watching Tape
1. The Broncos have to be worried about defensive end Jarvis Moss and the progress he is NOT making rushing the passer. He is a key for their pass rush and if he does not respond their corners (including Champ Bailey) will be in for a long year.
2. I love the look and play of defensive tackle Jason Jones of the Tennessee Titans. He is long, he can gain the line of scrimmage, and he will be able to bat down balls and bring pressure from inside. Jacob Ford, the sixth- round pick in 06 has some real juice as a rusher and he might be able to make a contribution this year.
3. Hats off to GM A.J. Smith of the Chargers. He does it every year and when I was in the Hotel it upset me each time. The Chargers hit on a college free-agent fullback, Mike Tolbert from Coastal Carolina. Tolbert is an excellent lead blocker and can make plays in the passing game. LT was interviewed recently and said Tolbert is the most impressive rookie he has seen in some time. Wow!!!
4. Miami has to find some speed at wide receiver or they will struggle to move the ball. There does not seem to be a player that can win right away at the line of scrimmage.
5. Glenn Dorsey is sure to make the Chiefs better inside this year, but Tank Tyler from North Carolina State is also a load to block and is very physical. He will emerge this year as a very good player.
6. Brandon Jackson of the Packers will not see the field if he continues to miss blocks and assignments in pass protection. No matter how well you can run with the ball, if you cannot pass protect, you cannot play. Quarterbacks don’t want to play with backs that cannot block. Just ask Aaron Rodgers.
7. Pittsburgh always finds linebackers and Bruce Davis, the 2008 third-round pick, looked very good rushing the other night.
Since I work for NFL Network, I have access to coaching video....and that is all I know how to watch. tv is too busy showing everything other then the game.
Mike,
Spot on re: Jackson. And you may want to tell the powers that be that there is a large contingent of fans that would love a show based on coaches tape. Much more so than a show about cheerleaders...
Bruce Davis is the real deal. He has played with his hand on the ground and as a LB.
Coach LeBeau increased the armament at his command.
IMO Davis was the best pass rusher out there after Hampton, only more polished. I knew he'd be gone in round three also(I thought late to mid two could have justified it). Was hoping the Raiders would try and move a four up to get him since our 3 was gone.
People were saying he was a fourth rounder on draft boards and in media, I was saying 'whaaaa?' More sacks than Gholston, and when the Jags made their jump up for an end it signaled a run on the position. People were drafting players ahead of him with less sacks, played by the PR machines.
Hope to see Davis make others regret not drafting him. With an NFL bloodline it's quite likely he does that in double measure.
Had his college QB played to any level the team would have drawn more acclaim. He put up the numbers and walked the walk. Too bad much of the media didn't want to see that.
AJ Smith is one of the better gm's in the league.....always finds talent. the trade for chambers was a steal last year, and will continie to be so this year.
mike, love the site, thank you for all the info.

Do you get the coaches tape to watch so you can see the whole field?
