Tebow is ready for his close-up

Here at the Daily Jolt, we prefer our coffee on the stove top and not from the electric drip machine. We're just old-school that way. Here's what's happening this Wednesday morning...

…Former Florida star quarterback Tim Tebow will participate in the Gators’ pro day today in Gainesville, ready to debut his much-anticipated revamped throwing mechanics. Expect Tebowmania all over the ‘net today, as Superman tries to sway public opinion and — more importantly — the beliefs of skeptical NFL personnel. If Tebow shows that he could make the necessary NFL throws in the comfort of his own backyard, he could potentially garner a number of private workouts from NFL teams, which could ultimately improve his draft stock. The NFP's Matt Bowen has a great morning piece on the three top Gators who will be participating in today's activities. On another Tebow note, the heir to his QB throne at UF, John Brantley, just can’t catch a break. Poor guy couldn’t escape Tebow’s shadow for two years — and still can’t, as the opening of the Gators’ spring practice and the beginning of the Brantley era will be upstaged by, once again, No. 15. "God bless."

…I really like what the Philadelphia Eagles did yesterday, as the club acquired defensive end Darryl Tapp from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for defensive end Chris Clemons and a fourth-round pick. While his sack production has declined from seven in 2007 to only 2.5 last season, he’s a durable lineman and only 25 years old. I think playing opposite Trent Cole could help him flourish and get his career headed back in the right direction. The Eagles also potentially added a complement to running back LeSean McCoy by signing restricted free agent Mike Bell to an offer sheet. We’ll see how that plays out, but I like what Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is doing in Philly — including the deal to bring in safety Marlin Jackson five days ago.

…I didn’t want to lead off with Tiger Woods’ return at the Masters because I find my caring about the matter at an all-time low. But, it’s obviously news, and that’s what we provide here at the Jolt — more times than not. So everyone will gather around their televisions in April to see if a disgraced hero can reclaim the sport that he so recently dominated. Me? I’m hoping for a Sunday showdown between Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington.

…The NCAA tournament kicked off last night — kind of, as Arkansas-Pine Bluff earned a 61-44 victory over Winthrop in the tournament's opening-round game. I will never be a proponent of the play-in game, as I think it’s a slap in the face to the smaller leagues and their schools. If we are going to have a play-in game, though, why not match up at-large teams like Florida and Washington — two teams that actually failed to win their conference championships unlike Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Winthrop?

…Speaking of the NCAA tournament, Kansas City Star columnist Jason Whitlock embarrassed himself once again. In regard to Duke receiving a No. 1 seed in the tourney — a spot that should have been given to West Virginia in my opinion — he believes that the fix was in because of what Coach K’s team does for ratings, saying the Blue Devils “score higher on the old ‘eyeball’ test. Fewer tattoos and more white guys. I just made many of you uncomfortable. Sorry. But it's a fact.” Yes, folks, he actually typed those words on his computer keyboard. Once again, you’re trying way too hard Mr. Whitlock. And this is coming from the ultimate Duke hater.

…Finally, Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all of my Irish and, most importantly, Scottish friends. After all, my guy Patrick was actually a Scot. Hell, happy day to all. After work I will be enjoying a few beverages at McFadden’s in Chicago, so all of my fellow Windy City residents are more than welcome to join me. The weather will be fantastic, so hope to see everyone there.
