From Terry McCormick of The Nashville City Paper:
When it comes to free agency, the Tennessee Titans aren’t splashy, but they are consistent. Their philosophy is to establish what they consider to be fair market value on a given player and then not stray too far from that price, no matter what others in the market might do.

The Titans’ theory regarding free agency and how much to pay will certainly be put to the test with the landmark seven-year, $100 million contract Albert Haynesworth got from the Washington Redskins, including $41 million in guarantees. As it turns out, the Titans drew their line in the proverbial sand, and didn’t deviate from it, which played a large role in Haynesworth signing his record deal with Washington early in free agency. Tennessee’s final offer to Haynesworth, according to a league source, amounted to a four-year package worth $34 million total, with about $20 million in guarantees, The City Paper learned.
This is the Redskin's M.O. I was in Seattle when Shawn Springs was set to be a free agent. Seattle offered him a 3-yr $12M contract extension, and the Skins offered him something like 5-yr $35M with a $10M signing bonus. They made Adam Archuletta the highest paid safety in the NFL, and signed Brandon Lloyd to a boatload of money too. For as good as a business man as Snyder is said to be, I dont think he understands what Market Value means. If you can get a guy for $20M, dont offer $40.
But this is why they havent been a contender in the 10 yrs he has been in Washington.
I would say the most annoying part of it is that teams like this drive up the price for everybody else. They give the mediocre players too much $ and then the all the agents must love it. Any guy who outperforms the overpaid guys has an excuse to top them and any guy whose numbers are close has an excuse to get a contract close to them. You can tell Reinfeld and Thompson worked together since they have similiar FA philosophies (which I agree with).
C09F,
I don't think Snyder cares what Market Value is, if he sees a player he wants he does whatever he can to get him regardless of the affect on the rest of the team. How they can consistantly dump millions on players and still be under the cap each year is beyond me.
Why would the Titans cry about tampering, when they had no intentions of trying to outbid any of the teams who were chasing Haynesworth. I could understand pursuing the charges if the titans were going to compete in the bidding war. It seems like they are trying to create a stink for no reason. You lost him because you didn't want to pay him! Get over it!
How about because it's a rule that the Skins can't negotiate with him before the free agency period starts?
