T.O. and Jessica Bring Hollywood to the Dallas Cowboys

Now that Terrell Owens has teamed up with NFL Super Girlfriend Jessica Simpson to dig at the Eagles, this Hollywood story has reached new heights, but is it really trash talk? It is a classic case of self promotion in my eyes. Matt Bowen

First it was Jessica Simpson on Good Morning America, spouting off about the Eagles-Cowboys match up-- embarrassing folks. I was ready for her to throw on Tony Romo's high school letter jacket and walk off the stage. Suddenly, I had flashbacks to my own high school homecoming pep rally watching the head cheerleader lead one of those corny chants and do a flip. Is this really happening? I can't get enough of this. But, as we always know with T.O., it gets better. Check out this story from the Dallas Morning News. During T.O.'s weekly press conference (in front of his locker) he politely said, "I think I got too big for Philly, too big for him (McNabb). But here, Tony and I have a great relationship." Sure you did guy. This is great stuff folks, great stuff. You and I can't come up with this kind of commentary alone, we need T.O. to get us to Sunday. But, let's be honest here. Call it trash talking if you want, but this is all about self-promotion, which is exactly what this league is about. There is no such thing as "bulletin board material" in the NFL anymore. Everyone knows each other. Free agency has allowed guys to play on multiple teams, and if you play long enough you can say hello to every opposing player on the other sidelines (minus the rookies, but vets don't talk to them anyway). Long gone are the days when Dick Butkis tried to physically maim the guy across from him. The reason T.O., Chad Whatever, and so on, "talk the talk" is to get their names in the news. Most of the time they do it when they are struggling on the field and want the fans to know that they still exist, but for T.O., it just adds to his persona. The guy is a top five playmaker in the league and he does his best to take a shot at Philly and McNabb whenever he can.  It's almost like saying, "Look at me now." And that's fine. Yes, I think it gets old, real old, but this is T.O. He wants us to watch him, listen to him, look at his website, and so on. You know what? He's doing a good job of it. We all are guilty in this regard. We all say we can't stand his antics and celebrations, but we all watch. T.O. has pulled us in-- and it keeps getting better.   Sure, the trash talk escalates on the field come Sundays, but all of this "he said, she said" garbage we hear during the week is exactly that-- garbage. It is soap opera drama that doesn't fit with the game of football, but it is here to stay. Think of it this way: The Dallas Cowboys are the Los Angeles Lakers of the NFL. They have the stars on their helmets and in the locker room, plus a quarterback with a Hollywood girlfriend. Throw in the fact that they may very well be the best team in the league (with the players to back it up), and you have a recipe for an E! True Hollywood Story right before our eyes. Or did we already see that on Hard Knocks?  Jerry Jones should be so proud of his boys-- and their girlfriends.

I agree with you that these guys are self-promoters, and the fact is that the casual fan knows Ocho Cinqo and TO, but probably doesn't know Brandon Marshall, who is probably the best receiver in football.

Hi Matt,

Do you think WR's like T.O. and Ocho Cinco are more likely to talk trash because they play on the outside and are at less risk of getting popped on a consistent basis?

It seems like WR's and CB's talk the most trash.

I hear less noise in the media about RB's, TE's, and lineman talking trash.

David- I think we put it on the WRs and DBs because they are some of the more known names in the league.

Awe Man, I could have gone the whole week without hearing about T.O or Jessica or Mucho Stinko. You guys were getting sooooo close to becoming my favorite site for all things football and then ya had to write this. Way to exacerbate the self promotion train Matt.

Just kidding of course. No news on Britney ?

I really enjoyed this article. As a fan, I always thought divisional foes disliked one another. I can see how free agency would change things.

Did any tension exists between NFC East teams when you played for the Redskins?

David- I think there was tension (with Dallas) but we always shook hands after the games.... They were so physical in the East that you kind of knew guys were just playing hard and doing their jobs

I thought Hollywood came to Dallas years ago with Thomas Henderson. Personally, I'd rather have him on my team than Jessica what's her name.
