From Sid Hartman of The Minneapolis Star Tribune:

This is the real story on where the negotiations stand between the Vikings and veteran quarterback Brett Favre.

Brett FavreAP

It doesn’t come from ESPN or any of the cable networks or all of those speculating on Favre’s future.

It comes direct from one of those who is involved in making the decision on whether or not Favre will be with the Vikings in 2009.

Yes, this is it: If Favre is willing to sign a contract with an option that will determine his pay based on how he performs and how much he plays, the Wilf family will go all out to add Favre to the team. The contract will not be guaranteed. It could have some good incentive clauses that will pay Favre well if he can perform like he did in 2007, when he led the Packers to a 13-3 record and was an intercepted pass away from going to the Super Bowl. On the other hand, if he fails to produce, he will get paid for just the time he was with the team. With the economy as poor as it is, the Wilfs aren’t going to sign Favre to a guaranteed contract and then find out he can’t perform. But they are willing to pay him big money if he can produce.

Hi Wes,
Would you say Conte would be a better fit as a safety in a zone scheme, maybe even a hybrid S/LB type if he added a little weight? Does he project as more of a special team guy?

I don't want to put that tag on him right away. He is only a jr. and if he can learn to press at the line I think he has a chance. But he lacks the quickness to simply flip and turn with NFL receivers. So we will see how he develops in the coming years.

Maybe you didn't see what Maryland's Kevin Barnes did to Best last season...http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3290/2853856718_5725f3c391.jpg

"On the other hand, if he fails to produce, he will get paid for just the time he was with the team."

We'll see if Favre's ego can take a contract based on performance. If not, look for another "I'm retired" scenario to emerge. Look for the BF PF machine to spin it to BF's advantage.

The 'good ole boy' is no more.

As a Packer fan, I have lost so much respect for Favre. Talk about leaving a legacy!

He should be able to get bonuses for any teammmates' first names that he can remember.

Cal has an attitude, so much good power running helps the entire team to assert physical play.

A great place to develop into potential pro material.

Chris-

And apparently you didn't see what Best did to Washington last season, 312 yards on 19 carries in about 2 1/3 quarters. If he'd been left in we well could have a new NCAA record on our hands (the score was out of hand at 38-0, but 19 carries is nothing).

Maryland will see plenty of Best on September 5 and I'm sure there will be fond memories of that image but little other comfort.

Favre is better than any Q-back the Vikings have. He will do more with a bad shoulder than the rest could at 100%.
