Will Fisher listen to Bud and start V.Y.?

When you are an 0-6 football team at this point of the NFL season, change is expected—almost demanded—and that is exactly what we are now seeing in Nashville, where Titans owner Bud Adams has spoken his peace about the quarterback position.

And it is all about Vince Young taking over for current starter Kerry Collins.

Adams has informed head coach Jeff Fisher that he wants to see Young under center for the Titans, who host Jacksonville this Sunday, telling the Tennessean, “I have been wanting (Fisher) to play Vince Young more because Collins has been having his problems out there. I just think we need to find out how well (Young) can do.”

Adams went on to say, “Vince has won a lot of games for us.”

Yes, I agree, but V.Y. hasn’t won games for this franchise for a long time, and that is why I am wondering about the decisions that Fisher will ultimately have to make this week as the team starts to game plan tomorrow for Sunday.

Because if Collins is playing so poorly—which we can all agree on by watching this offense in ’09—then why hasn’t Young already been asserted into the starting lineup?

Now, we can speculate all we want, but Fisher has earned the respect in this league for his coaching abilities. I don’t know him personally, but I do know many of his former players, and I have never heard a negative thing uttered about the man. He seems, well, like the ultimate head coach to play for. Plus, we aren’t on the practice fields and we aren’t in the meeting rooms. We can’t see if V.Y. is ready to play, or if he has shown the coaching staff that he is now mature enough to lead this offense.

In saying that, we should respect Fisher’s decision for having kept Young on the bench thus far this season, because if he was good enough to play—and win—for the Titans, he most likely would have been in the lineup already over Collins.

But, he hasn’t been. Instead, he’s been regulated to backup duty for the entire season up until this point.

That is why I am concerned whenever an owner starts to get involved with the quarterback and the head coach. We have already seen it in Oakland this year with Al Davis lobbying for JaMarcus Russell, and now we are seeing it in Tennessee. Yes, we all understand that first-round quarterbacks do not do the owner any good by sitting on the bench with a bag of money on the ground next to them, but I find it hard to question a coach like Fisher.

He has won too many games, and despite his team’s lack of production this season, I still am going to side with his decisions over the owner from way up above in the luxury box.

But, V.Y. will most likely play this Sunday. Is it the right move? For the future? Maybe. But for right now? Only if Fisher makes the call.
