Gators lose lineman to injury

Florida offensive lineman Xavier Nixon will have his left knee examined and could miss the Sept. 3 season opener against Miami (Ohio).

The sophomore, who is competing for the starting left tackle job with Matt Patchan, started the final five games last season. Head coach Urban Meyer says the injury is “nothing major,” but that it “might be a couple weeks” before the lineman returns to the field.

Patchan just returned to Gators practice after sitting out the last two weeks because of a broken bone in his right wrist. He was seen in a cast last week, but Meyer says that he has returned to participate in practice. He is not, however, taking part in full-contact drills.
