Iowa loses LB to season-ending injury
Iowa's defensive depth took a hit on Thursday when the school announced that linebacker Shane DiBona will miss the entire 2011 season due to an Achilles tendon injury suffered in practice Wednesday.
The redshirt sophomore played in every game of the 2010 season and entered camp as the No. 2 outside linebacker on the team's depth chart. The 6-2, 235-pounder had successful surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.
DiBona played in all 13 games last season, including two starts. He was a member of Iowa's 2009 recruiting class but redshirted his freshman year. He was also one of the 13 Hawkeye players who suffered from “exertional rhabdomyolysis” this past January following offseason workouts.
Christian Kirksey and Anthony Hitchens are the likely candidates to step up and fight for the backup spot vacated by DiBona. Sophomore Dakota Getz could also eventually find himself in that mix as well.
