Kelly: Golson and Hendrix are '1A and 1B' in QB race

With Tommy Rees out for the season opener due to suspension, Everett Golson and Andrew Hendrix received most of the snaps Wednesday in South Bend as Notre Dame strapped on the pads for the first time this preseason.

All eyes are on the quarterback battle being conducted at ND, and Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly said the two signal-callers are "1A and 1B" in their battle as they strive to take the opening snap September 1 in Dublin, Ireland, against Navy.

"They've been pretty equal with close to 50-50 with Everett and Andrew and probably a little less with Gunner [Kiel]," Kelly said, per the Chicago Tribune. "[Golson and Hendrix] both have made great progress. We've had over 215 snaps leading into today of 11-on-11 work. They've both got over 100 reps."

Both Golson and Hendrix bring different skill sets to the position. Golson is more athletic and a better runner, and he also had the most impressive spring game performance. But Hendrix, while not as athletic, can still move around the pocket and use his feet effectively. And he also has the stronger arm of the two. Kelly hinted that he could use both QBs against the Midshipmen.

"I've played two quarterbacks before and I've had great success with that," he said. "We'll know if we get to game time that both of them have to play. Obviously they both have ability to be starters, so I can't say that I wouldn't be comfortable.

However, Kelly did say that he'd prefer one quarterback to stand out and take the reins of the offense.
