Kiel re-opens his recruitment

Gunner Kiel, one of the nation's best quarterback prospects in the Class of 2012, has told Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson that he is re-evaluating his commitment to his homestate Hoosiers.

The senior at Columbus East High School had strongly considered Alabama before making his commitment to IU. He also received offers from Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Florida, USC and Michigan among many others.

It is unknown how many visits Kiel will now take after re-opening his recruitment, but his mother told the South Bend Tribune that he will travel to Notre Dame this weekend on an unofficial visit when the Fighting Irish host USC.

Indiana is in midst of a 1-6 season under Wilson, who took over in Bloomington after last season. The Hoosiers have lost to Ball State and North Texas, and they rank 99th in scoring this year among FBS teams with an average of 21 points per game. The poor play likely made Kiel's decision to open up his recruitment a lot easier.

Kiel's older brother Dusty currently plays for the Hoosiers and has started two games after losing a quarterback battle in fall camp.
