Mackey Award watch list
Note: The National Football Post sends its thoughts and prayers to the friends and family of Syracuse great John Mackey, who passed away following a long battle with dementia. He was 69.
The 2011 John Mackey Award preseason watch list was released Wednesday by the Nassau County Sports Commission. The award, established in 2001, is given annually to the most outstanding tight end in FBS college football. In addition to honoring on-the-field accomplishments, the award also stands for positive sportsmanship-like behavior, good academic standing and exceptional leadership abilities.
The award, given to Arkansas' D.J. Williams in 2010, is named after NFL Hall of Famer John Mackey, who is regarded as one of the greatest tight ends of all time. Mackey played in the NFL for 10 years, was elected to the Pro Bowl five times and was named to the NFL's all-decade team.
The award recipient is determined by confidential balloting of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee, which is composed of respected members of the media and former NFL players.
The 2011 winner will be presented live at the Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on December 8, 2011.
