McCartney: Colorado offered Embree head gig
According to former head coach Bill McCartney, Colorado has offered Jon Embree the opportunity of being the new face of the program.
John Henderson of The Denver Post reports that the Washington Redskins tight ends coach has been given a formal offer, and CU administration is hoping that he accepts and hires former Buff great Eric Bieniemy as his offensive coordinator.
According to the report, Embree has told Redskins associates that he has received an offer and is weighing whether to accept the job.
McCartney himself was a candidate to replace Dan Hawkins but said if had been named head coach that he wanted to hire Embree and Bieniemy on his staff and groom one of them to eventually take over as head coach.
When it was apparent that he would not land the gig, McCartney said he pushed for Embree or Bieniemy to get the job. Bieniemy is the running backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings.
"It was never about me doing it again," McCartney told the paper. "It was about setting the table for a black man to come in (as head coach). And he (Mike Bohn) hired one. Now, give him a chance."
Neither Embree nor athletic director Mike Bohn could be reached for comment.
